Arpaio support from out of the (boys in) blue

On Monday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio got some support from out of the blue.

From a couple of boys in blue, to be exact, when two Phoenix police officers, one in the Maryvale precinct and one who works downtown, called to tell me that Arpaio had done local police - and us - a big favor. Or as one of Phoenix officers put it, "The fact is, since our department has allowed officers to partner with ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), our jobs have gotten easier. The streets are a little safer. And we (the officers) are a little safer. And honestly, Arpaio's policy is what helped us to get our new policy."

This is NOT what the critics of Arpaio want to hear. I know. I'm one of them. But among all of the people involved with illegal immigration, none deserve of our attention more than the officers on the street. However, since neither of these officers felt comfortable speaking on the record, I contacted Mark Spencer, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, and asked him if other union members are saying the same thing.

"Yes," he said. "I think that the current policy, which allows our guys to communicate with ICE based on reasonable suspicion, has been very helpful. Just as I think that the proactive immigration legislation coming out of the state capitol has been helpful."

Spencer also believes that Arpaio has been the target of unfair criticism. He points out that it was public pressure generated by Arpaio's aggressive approach to immigration enforcement that led to changes in Phoenix's policy.  "We had the president of the Border Patrol union in here recently," Spencer told me. "He reported to us that apprehensions at the border have gone down 24 percent. Well, we look at that here and we see a correlation. (Mayor) Phil Gordon just said at the State of the City address - and he's correct - that violent crimes in the city of Phoenix have gone down 24 percent. Stolen vehicles in the city of Phoenix have gone down 27 percent. So, we see that as a real common sense connection."

On Monday, Mayor Gordon, a long-time critic of Arpaio, said that because of civil-rights investigations into the sheriff, as well as congressional hearings, he will stop speaking publicly about Arpaio.

For his part, Spencer believes that the sheriff is being targeted over politics. He also believes that the revised immigration enforcement policy in Phoenix (which Gordon supported) has decreased crime. "I think the new policy cultivates an atmosphere of deterrence," Spencer said. "If during a contact we believe a person is in the country illegally and that person is in some way connected to criminal activity we are authorized to make a phone call to ICE with a supervisor's permission. The key in that policy is the connection to criminal activity. I think that is a very reasonable starting point."

How is he so certain?

Last week, Spencer attended the sentencing hearing for Jose Abel Cabrera-Somosa. During a routine traffic stop in October 2007, Cabrera-Somosa shot Phoenix Officer Bret Glidewell in the chest. The officer was saved by a bulletproof vest and later identified Cabrera-Somosa, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, as the shooter. "Somosa claimed in court that he had been in the country six years and had been stopped by the police four times," Spencer said. "Well, a more proactive policy would have relieved our officer of that life-threatening situation, and it would have relieved this guy of having to spend the next 34 years in prison."

The Sheriff manages to turn a couple cops into friends while he is flushing our tax dollars down the law suit toilet and we praise him. He is doing his job of enforcing the laws. I don't read about every other Sheriff and Chief of Police in the state making press conferences every time their department makes an arrest. My problem with our Sheriff isn't his ability to do what ever the hell he wants and tell everyone to go to hell, I like that. Its the millions and millions of our tax dollars that get shelled out to criminals every time he or his employees do something stupid at his direction through policy. Cops don't need praise, I do my job without any cameras or press conferences and have a good track record never wasted any tax dollars through law suits for violating some shit heads rights. Do the research and you will see what I'm talking about.

And today in Bellingham, Washington, 28 illegals caught in a workplace raid were returned to work and given work permits. This is Janet's approach to enforcing our nation's immigration laws. I for one am so looking forward to mainstreet Americans finally having enough of this crap. I'm simply too old to go to war against these traitors but i sure as hell can give encouragement and support to those that will.

Semper Fi!

Thing is, if he can make the county an unwelcome place for criminals and illegals, he's saving us far more than what he's spending in lawsuits.  Don't believe that?  Look at a similar size county in California and compare what they spend compared to what Maricopa spends on housing/services for criminals and illegals.  A few million is chump change.  Of course I'd be happy if it wasn't spent, but by comparison it's nothing.

Its not just a couple million, the count at last I recall is some where near 200+ million since the first election. Now giving him credit for the first 8 years as he hadn't lost his mind yet. The last 10 years have been very bad. So 200 million might be small but imagine how many employees he could have hired with that money. (deputies and lots of them fight crime) He freaks out when 1.6 million is pulled from his budget but in the last 12 months we have given out 21 million in law suits for his actions. So keep on supporting him but I think you and his followers should foot the bill not me and the countless others who don't deserve to pay the tab. Next time you want to cry about higher taxes just remember your a supporter of our tax dollars being given out millions at a time to criminals because of him.
Like I said before lots of other cops keep the county and state safe without costing us hundreds of millions in law suits. California is a mute point they have 10 to 100 times the people in the same space. More people means more crime.
