We've owned our own place since 1971 right on the Beach at cholla Bay.  Just got our Federal Zone lease.  You can't believe the beauty of our view.  My wife is actually afraid to go, but I think the most dangerous part is going from Tucson to Lukeville.  I carry my gun and leave it at the Insurance Building in Lukeville. (They do that for folks)

We have to pay our Mexican taxes (minimal compared to U S) and I want to go to the Light House, and Maria Bonita for dinner.
Has anyone heard of any incidents at R P ?

Yes, a few assaults recently, but usually RP is rather safe. An old friend of mine used to go down there quite often and camp on the beach just north of RP, but he got robbed there ten years ago or so and hasn't been back since.

Personally, I encourage all my fellow Americans to boycott Mexico and all Mexican products due to the covert war being waged against us by that government and many of its citizens. Actually, its not all that covert as they have been rather open at times in discussing the policy of Reconquista against the southwestern U.S., at least until recent years when illegal immigration and border security has been put more into the spotlight.

... Puerto Peñasco is relatively isolated from large Mexican cities with larger Mexican crimes. Drive purposefully and quick, stay vigilant, don't "stand out" as an American and you should be just fine.

That said, I no longer go into Mexico. I used to head to Rocky Point a few times a year

There are some beautiful places in Mexico.  But there are too many instances of people getting abducted so I just assume stay away and not become a victim in a country were I cant even speak there language. Plus i don't think anyone in my family could afford the ransom.LOL or they could but they wouldn't do it for me.

DONT DO IT!!

There is a reason all of northern Mexihell is on the no fly list! Not worth it dude! I refuse to go anywhere in Mexico that is within 250 clicks of the border. The whole damn place is unstable! The murders and kidnappings are now also happening in the big resort areas also! Check out the state dept's website. Remember our govt loves mexico. So if they are issuing a warning then something is up!!!  I feel safe in Cabo for now! But dont worry, crappy nappy and lord OHBOY will protect us all!!!!!

Also, don't forget that Mexico has been pushing for strict gun control laws (including, but not limited to AWBs) in the U.S. for decades with sush activity becoming stronger and more vocal since the NAFTA fiasco. How any gun owning patriot could help support such a meddling two-bit corrupt banana republic by spending money down there or buying its imported products is beyond me.

I was just in RP a couple of weeks ago checking out a buddies new place that he has just south of town.  Everything and eveyone acted just the same as what I have observed the other 20ish times iv been down there.  I have never had any issues that were not my fault (spring break trips durring college, you get the idea).  I don't think Sonoita is plauged with the drug stuff as bad as some of the other places along the border, and I think if you just stay on the main road and get to RP as quickly as you can you should be fine.  Just my thoughts, Ill risk the trip but I wouldnt want my little sister or mother making the trip.

We're thinking about heading down there this weekend.  A relative supposedly has a house there.

Anyone else have any input of recent trips?  Routes, areas to avoid, etc?  I'm in Tucson.

I'm kinda nervous about making the trip, but my inlaws go a couple times a year, except this past year.  I've never been past Nogales, Mex.

I'm blond and blue eyed.  Is it worth dyeing my hair darker for the trip?

I just talked to a Border Patrol officer who is in the Nogales Zone.  He takes his family to Rocky Point for deep sea fishing.  There is a major police and military presence and they are friendly to gringos.

I go to Agua Preita and Nogales for business on a regular bases. It is a bit eerie if something has happened near the time of our trip. We travel in groups  of 2 to 4 or 5 people but if I'm going alone I'm usually with a local escort and don't worry too much but I know safe people and  places to go to if I were ever in a bad spot. I'm not in the drug trade. They don't want me. (I won't drive in alone.)  Travel with a group. Keep a confident and aware presence about you.  Don't comes across as weak or scared. Don't wear expensive jewelry or watches. Don't attract attention to yourself. Just like when you are in Phoenix. Did I recently hear that Phoenix is 2nd behind Mexico City for kidnappings now. Mostly people involved in the drug trade.

I have only had one bad experience in Rocky Point. We got chased by the Federales. It was my fault for straying off the beaten path, at night. They ended up letting us go and was an unerving incident no doubt but we lived so......Stay where the rest of the touristas stay and go.

Disclaimer: I'm not an authority on travel in Mexico, this is only my experience and not a suggestion to travel or not travel into or out of the country of Mexico, Messy Desk

I wouldn't go down to Rocky Point or anywhere else in that shit-hole to the south if they were giving away hookers and beer for free.  If you really need a beach, head to San Diego.

Why would you want to vacation in a place that you have to worry about driving down to or wouldn't want your mother or sister going? RP is well protected IMO because MX wants gringos to spend their money down there. However, there is a big power struggle right now between the cartels for control of Sonoran smuggling routes and they don't give a crap whose in the way when they want to take out an adversary. Are there more dangerous places in the U.S? Probably, but at least I can be armed to protect myself and family in the U.S. Spend your money in the U.S. where it belongs, illegal aliens living here send way too much down there as it is.

Tommorrow could be worse than today

Going to any part of Mexico is stupid, you have 0 immunities, and the more money you got the bigger chance you will be the next abducty.

Especially if cartels are looking for high profile targets  as bargaining chips for future exchanges for their own members

the Mexican government is at a loss to control the drug carels and they do not have the ability to protect you .You can not arm and protect yourself ,so take it from there . Wait till the situation gets resolved B4 going .

I wouldn't go now either.  RP may be safe, but if the S hits the F while you're there, getting home may be problematical.

Like other countries Americans are ignorant and hysterical about traveling to, Mexico is an awesome place to visit. My family has been travelling to Puerto Penasco since '64. Hell, you're safer in Rocky Point than anywhere in PHX or any big city in the USA. Penasco isn't a drug traffic hub. Just don't be a drunken dumbass. All the shit you're hearing about is in Juarez (pop. 1.5 million) and Ensenada (.5 million). Huge, ugly cities on or near the border. Stay away from those places, alright.
The peso is devalued down to 15 per USD making it a damned good deal again. We went down to San Felipe (straight through Mexicali) with the 5th wheel last Christmas and had a great time. No problemo whatsoever. Can't wait to go again. The fewer Gringos the better. H.
