OK, so I'm coming to Mesa in a week or so to visit relatives and check out apartments. I'm looking for studios and one bedroom. Anyone know any good places? Places to avoid?
Also anything else I should check out when I'm in town? Sorry if this doesn't belong in HTF. |

| I used to live in an APT in the area. Best advice, go a cheap as you are willing, visit the place at night(Fri/Sat) and hang out, see how it is. When you move in, do it fast and keep any high value stuff disguised. Don't show off your weapons, use a discreet bag. If the junkies don't think you have anything to steal they leave you alone; unless you are in a real shitty part of town. |

I make $1000 a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. A house isn't much of an option, even renting with others, a lot of people won't want a closet full of EBRs in the house. It also doesn't have to be Mesa, just the general area. Unfortunately I would avoid all areas that cater to your budget. Just keep your valuables hidden when you move in and watch your six and you should be fine. |

I'm really only worried about break ins when I'm not at home, the only valuables I own are my guns, my computer and a small TV, everything I own fits in my car, a 4 door sedan. Would open carrying to and from the apartment act as a deterrent, or would it just advertise that I own guns and may have more in the apt.? |

Don't advertise, the junkies/thief's know when you go to work, and will rob you blind. Remember, we work so they don't have too. A quick tip; I always looked for the apartments that where 2nd story with only the front door easily accessible. Change out the standard deadbolt, some of the cheaper apartments don't change the locks when people move and the junkie neighbor may have a key. This may violate your lease but oh well. |

Mesa is a pretty big place, some parts are just fine, others are hellholes. The advice to cruise by prospective places late Fri/Sat night is very good advice though. I lived in Mesa when I first got to the valley in 2003. The farther away from downtown you can live the better off you will be! I lived in an apartment just off 9th St & Country Club. In the two years I was there I saw the neighborhood noticeably deteioriate. There wasn't ONE Friday or Saturday night when the Mesa police helis weren't circling the 'hood with the Nightsun going, searching for some perp! The worst that happened to me was having my bicycle seat stolen, but it was getting lots worse when me & the missus finally bought a house near South Mountain. |

I found a place in phoenix called timbertree, it's run by a company called aimco, very very nice place, 3 pools, gym, gated, several employees actually live there, which is a good sign.
Talked with my boss about transferring today, he said it was no problem, everything is looking good for a move after my birthday (valentines day I noticed something very interesting when I was there. We went to picacho peak, we hiked about halfway up, not once did I have even the slightest knee pain, something I have daily just from walking and standing. So now my move isn't just for financial and political reasons, but my health and well being demands it. I also noticed that the girls there seemed nicer and more flirtier. I am definitely going to be buying a pistol ASAP once I get there. AZ doesn't have any kind of one handgun a month law does it? |

AZ doesn't have any kind of one handgun a month law does it? Yeah, I'd go broke if I had to buy one every month. LOL, I meant you are limited to one a month, they have that in some states, but you are exempt if you have a CCW. Quoted:

They told me about $480 a month for a studio. really? + utilities? thats not bad at all. Apartments around me cost more because their within walking distance to MCC. If i had a car i would of moved farther away Utilities are not included, but they put everything in one bill for you, especially for people like me, who are bad with remembering to pay bills.

No, the one handgun a month is one state over to the west in People's Republik of Kalifornistan. I moved from there a year and a half ago, my sanity returned instantly. I have a C&R FFL and had a COE (CA thing) and was exempted from the one gun a month law, but it cost me almost $200 to obtain those. Have a great gun carryin' Kenpo day Clyde |

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I need to ask, has anyone every heard of any of these apartment complexes telling tenants they aren't allowed to own or carry firearms on premises? I asked the place I'm going to if they didn't allow anything, not being specific, they didn't say anything.
Is there a law in AZ preventing landlords from telling tenants firearms aren't allowed? Also, my tentative move date is set for march 1st. |
