Live in Vail, have service with Alltel. Don't get service in my home or anywhere near my neighborhood. In town and in Green Valley I get good service but things like voicemail and sms messaging work sporadically at best. Using an old Mot V710 which I think has seen better days, hoping my problems are partially related to the phone. Not necessarily wanting to stay with Alltel (the Alltel rep recommended Verizon as an alternative) but was told I could try a new phone for 15 days, no strings. Alltel rep recommended a Mot Razr, said the Mot's get the best reception, and the Razr in particular is the best he's seen for keeping service in weak signal areas. Wondering if there are any techno-geeks here who have experience with cell service in crappy service areas -- which brands/models seem to work the best? Thanks. |

SatCom would be the way to go... but beyond that my Verizon has always worked great when we do pickups in GV, Vail, Araivaca, and even out where we sit on 286. I usually have 2-3 bars (still digital service) in those areas. I have the Casio VZOne phone from Verizon. Not sure if you want to switch services, but I believe Verizon does the trial period stuff too. Just FYI. Stay safe, AJ |
| I'll second going to Verizon. If you think you will ever want to use it overseas (or even in Mexico), think about getting a phone that also can do GSM. Verizon is primarily CDMA right now, but they will be changing their network over to GSM over the next few years. |
| If you decide to go with Verizon, be sure to read this over so you get the best deal possible. |
Interesting. I get no service at home (Alltel) but when my brother came down to visit his phone worked in my house just fine (Verizon). Hmmm.... Maybe its my phone and not their network. |

I used ATT for years, and switched to Sprint in August. The coverage seems comparable. Each had unique dead spots but that is to be expected. You should be able to try any of the major carriers for 30 days before you port your old number (that's what I did when switching to Sprint). That way if it isn't any better or you don't like it for some reason you keep your old phone/ number till you decide what to do. Of course if you go this route, you have 2 phones/ numbers for a while. |
Verizon and Alltel do NOT share towers/ network in any way, shape or form. Verizon is "B" band cellular and Alltel is "A" band. They do have almost identical coverage areas. If you look around, everytime Verizon builds a new site, Alltel puts one in the same area. and vice-versa. Verizon is known for having more remote coverage. Verizon is a CDMA based system and will not be changing format to GSM anytime soon. |
