Take the MSFT class.  They let you use their equipment, you learn a bunch of good things to keep you alive, and at the end you get your license.

+1 verbatim.

I did it in the dirt from 9-16.  Even if you already are/think you area decent rider, it will get you an insurance discount.

The nicest part is going to the MVD upon completion of your class.  No MVD written or road test, just give them your class issued cert and walk out with your "M" endorsement.

1. Take the MSFT class
2. Practice slow moves in a parking lot. The entire test in done in a very small area.

When I took the test in '95 I had just bought a GSXR750. I was not very adept at slow speed manuvers. I ended up borrowing my friends Honda Reflex 250 scooter for the test, and passed easily. I think there were 10 people in my test...4 failed. From what I could tell they were new to riding and had bikes bigger than what they handle.

Good luck.

My problem is that I do not live in the Valley or anywhere near a place that does the training.

I guess I did it the hard way - read the book.  Trucked my bike to the testing place under I-10.  Passed the test(easy), did the riding demo for the examiner and got the endorsement.
