My current permit is due for renewal in February, I had a good friend tell me he was told to do nothing that a new permit will come via the USPS automatically.
Is this information correct?

Not a new permit, but an application for renewal. You have to re-fingerprint, and submit within a certain time prior to or after your current permit expires. If you let your current permit expire, you're in limbo until the new one arrives.
