Will be staying in Sedona for about a week.  Trip to Grand Canyon etc.  Want to avoid the tourist traps.  I guess the whole area is one.  Anything specific to avoid or a must see would be greatly appreciated.  I'm coming from Charleston, SC.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Stay away from Slide Rock and the shopping areas along the main strip.  It's been a while since I've been there, but I like hiking or biking away from the crowds.  I don't remember exactly where I went but I do remember seeing arches (not the golden ones) and sink holes.  It is probably too hot right now to do much hiking.

Definitely come prepared for HOT weather with the strong likelihood of torrential thunder storms during the late afternoons.

Sun block, wide brim hats, and lighter colored cotton fabrics will help you out. And for God's sake stay hydrated! Drink plenty of fluids during, and especially before your outdoor excursions. If you do plan on hiking I'd recommend some sort of small day pack with a (filled) water bladder, a couple bottles of Gatorade, and some snacks. Of course, tailor your supplies to the length & difficulty of your planned outdoor activities.

All common sense stuff really (for those of us with any sense at all!).

Have fun --- that's a pretty area you're going to.

Sedona is good for buying expensive art (crap).

If you can swing it, go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
It is a longer drive but worth it.
It only has a fraction of the tourist stuff you will find at the South Rim.

There are lots of hikes in and around Sedona.  Some will have varying degrees of crowds and difficulty, but it's the way to go.  If you're not a hiker Boynton Canyon is easy for nonhikers, but start early and carry water, don't be discouraged by the first mile, it gets better.

You'll see a lot more to remember with your boots on the trails than in the tourist BS downtown.

There are some great canyons not far from Sedona that are very empty and very beautiful, but slot canyons are not safe when  there is a chance of rain.

Hey speaking of Sedona aren't there any gunshops there?
I was up there for a quick labor day getaway (for the wifee)and didn't see much of anything remotely resembling anything to shooting sports.
Probably dumb question, I know..

Any ARFcommer actually live in Sedona???

Sedona has way too many new age hippy, granola eating, unshaven earth godess types.  I have to bite my tongue every time I'm there not to make fun of someone buying a karma crystal to heal their aura or some garbage.

Traffic sucks. Parking sucks.  It's a tourist trap and nothing more.

Sack up and go during the winter when it's "cold" out and hike the trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the place.   It is one of the most gorgeous places on the face of the planet.   Just avoid the tourist center of the place and you'll be fine.

Any of you guys ever open carry in Sedona? I'd be interested to hear what all the hippies did.

I think I'll take a job Sedona and re-introduce the community real America and the 2nd Amendment(Arizona style) by legally carrying as much as possible- maybe even open up a Gunshop!  Heck, the place is beautiful to live (albeit a little pricey).
I don't care if it's invaded with 'softies' and foreigners (aka out of state Calis. etc). WHY LET THEM HAVE IT FOR THEMSELVES?

Once again, any arfcommers live in or even NEAR Sedona ?- what's the SITREP?
