Resident of Arizona here, wanting to purchase a handgun. Now, seeing as how I'm only 19 years of age, I'm not able to legally purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer, this I know. However, as far as my research shows, I'm able to purchase a handgun from a private party and/or any other unlicensed seller. However, I've been denied several good deals on quality firearms sold by private parties due to my age. If someone could please show me, or post a link to, any Federal or Arizona State law/regulation/statue/rule that states a person over 18 years of age in good standing is unable to purchase a handgun from an unlicensed seller. After checking out several sites and reading over numerous statues, I haven't found one piece of writing that states someone over 18 years of age cannot purchase a handgun from a private party in the state of Arizona. Could someone please enlighten me as to why those few sellers passed my offers? I'd like to think my cash is just as green as the next person's... Now then, my quest for a Sig P229R (.40 S&W), HK USP Tactical (.45), Glock 20 (10mm), and/or Steyr M9 (9mm) continues... |
Nothing wrong with you buying a handgun from an unlicensed party. The 21 age limit is a Federal law and only applies to licensed dealers. I've got a 9mm P-226N and Berretta 96FS that I'll be selling when I get back from Texas in a couple weeks if your interested.

| I can't find it in writing. But if it makes you feel any better, I am 20 and have bought about 6 handguns since I turned 18, one I even bought from an ex-cop. I have been pulled over a few times with the pistol in the car and the cop just ran the numbers and gave it back |

18 USC 922, United States Code TItle 18, Section 922, Subsection(s) B and X (b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver - (1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than eighteen years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than twenty-one years of age; (x) (1) It shall be unlawful for a person to sell, deliver, or otherwise transfer to a person who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe is a juvenile - (A) a handgun; or (B) ammunition that is suitable for use only in a handgun. For purposes of this subsection, the term ''juvenile'' means a person who is less than 18 years of age. Edited to bold |
as far as I know its NOT against AZ law for peopel under 21 (but above 18) to buy/ own a handgun. And the way the laws about the 21 and over purchasing sounds, only FFL's can't sell handguns to people under 21. Remember laws don't tell you what you can do, only what you can't do. |
Hehe, yeah, I don't like to settle for less when it comes to the good stuff. If I'm going to have a hobby, I might as well go with the best, right? After all, I chose this as a "hobby" to retain and/or increase monetary value. All the money I would've otherwise spent on big rims, automotive "accessories", and/or high-end computer hardware is going towards quality firearms that will (hopefully) retain their value. Your only obstacle is buying ammunition, you can't at Walmart, where it's awesomely cheap, and certain other places might give you static. Best bet is to get friendly with a small gun store near you, it's what I do. Email, we should go shooting sometime, I'm a member of the SGC. |
I disagree. I have never had a problem buying ammo at walmart. I just tell them it is for a 9mm carbine and they sell it to me. Usually I don't even get carded because I carry in there. |
| According to my interpretation of the Arizona Gun Owners Guide, it is not illegal for a minor to transport an unloaded firearm to and from places where shooting is not prohibited, as long as the firearms remained cased and unloaded, and the minor in question has a signed note from his parent or guardian authorizing the conduct. I believe possession and transport (to and from places where shooting is not illegal) of a handgun by a minor is also okay under the above circumstances, but with the addition that the unloaded handgun be in a locked case during transport. This is all assuming an adult is not accompanying the minor. I do not believe it is legal for a minor to by a firearm from a licensed or unlicensed individual. |
