Coyotes are open year round and there is no limit. No night hunting. 5 round mag limit. No FMJ General hunting licence with no special permit or tag required. No baiting. (But if you find a dead horse or cow they are feeding off of, go for it.) You won't need anything like a 22-250, but it will sure do the job. Most of your shots in this terrain will be well under 100 yards. I've shot them as close as 15 paces and as far as 175 yds. Most are between 20-50 yards due to the limited visability afforded by the terrain. Sit down the next time you're in the desert and take a look. You can't see far. I use handloaded 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets over 27 grains of Win 748. It kicks their ass. The action is fast when they come in and you won't be able to swing a 24" barreled rifle around for a shot very easily. A short, light rifle such as a flat top AR15 carbine with a 16" barrel and EOTECH, AIMPOINT or other red dot scope works great. So does a varible power scope in 3x9. Turn it down to 3X when you hunt because you won't have time to screw around withit when you spot a coyote coming in. Not to mention if they see you move (and they will) they will disappear before you know what's happened. If you have never hunted coyotes, take someone that's been doing it for a while. It will cut your learning curve down tremendously. Coyotes are not easy to call. Or easy to kill when you do call them in. Coyotes are the most challenging animals you'll ever hunt. They are smart and very unprdictable. Most people frown upon hunting them this time of year. One, they are busy making and raising next years targets. The bitches are dropping their litters right about now and the pups will be in the dens until the middle of summer. Two, the fur is totally crap. The best times to hunt them is Oct-Feb. A good place to start hunting is right out your back door. Palaminos is loaded with them. Try down along the border road west of King's Ranch Road. . You can even call Mexican coyotes (4 legged) over the border line sometimes. But don't leave your keys in your truck. |
