I will be spending next week on vacation in AZ. One of the things I want to do is campout in the desert and do some plinking. Are there are areas you can do this in without trespassing, or breaking any laws? I will have very limited off-road abilities because I will be in a rental car.

depends on what city you're going to

ETA: bring maglites and leave all rugers at home.  also rental cars make great rally cars

Here are some sites that can help you out. What part of Arizona are you going to?

  Arizona Bureua of Land Management

  USA Recreation

  Arizona State Land

  Nationa Forest

  KOA Campgrounds

  Campgrounds of America

As for plinking, you can only do that on BLM and National Forest land. Although some of the lower Tonto National Forest. Just East and North East of Phoenix is off limits to target shooting. Not on State land. Although alot of people do.

Camping could be a little chilly, at night, in the desert. To down right cold in the high country.

Also be careful camping just off busy highways. Last year North of Phoenix, a young couple was killed sleeping in the back of there pickup.

OK, where can I pickup some XM193 or some other reasonable priced, decent plinking ammo between Sedona and Tucson along I17/I10?

I am going to be in Sedona for the first couple days, then staying in Scottsdale, then Tucson. Figure I will camp out somewhere in the south near Tucson.

Thanks for the advise and information so far.

ETA: I am bringing tripwires and signaling devices plus will have AR and side arms for any potential serial killers/etc

It is legal to target shoot anywhere on national forest land.  Assuming you are shooting safely against a backdrop.

In Tucson the closest place to I10 that I can think of  to purchase ammo would be:
Jensen's West Arizona Sportsman
1280 W Prince Rd
Tucson,  AZ 85705 - 3113
(520) 293-8516

Although, you may not find what you are looking for or get very competent customer service.

There is a very good place in Tucson for military ammo, however it is far from the highway:
C & T Enterprises Inc
2100 N Wilmot Rd
Tucson,  AZ 85712 - 3050
(520) 298-0422

The guy who owns the place is named Walt and he has fair deals on surplus ammo.  It is a one man operation, so you will have to call first.  He is not always open regular business hours.

The best all around shop in Tucson would be:
Murphy's Guns And Gunsmithing
3235 N Country Club
Tucson,  AZ 85716 - 1351
(520) 881-7074

They won't do you wrong.

I don't know much about the Phoenix aria, but I do know that they have about 300 gun shops or something.  Over 300 businesses that are gun related and list their numbers in the phone book.  (www.dexonline.com)  You may want to do some calling around and do your business up there.
