I was in Prescott over the weekend so I stopped into J&G to pickup one of their Mausers.  The strangeness started when it came time to complete the yellow form.

The clerk refused to sell because my driver's license doesn't have my current home address on it (I updated the address with MVD online so I didn't get a new license).  He said that they require a government issued photo ID card with the current address on it, but he would accept a vehicle registration or voter id card.  I still don't understand how a vehicle registration or voter id card meets the definition of PHOTO id.

My vehicle registration has a PO Box on it, and I don't carry my voter id card.  My numerous pieces of ID (including a CCW) wasn't good enough for him, so no Mauser for me.

This is a new experience.  I've bought guns (including from J&G) in the past with the exact same driver's license (including an old address) without problem.  They have the right to run their business however they want, but it's a little strange that it has never been an issue in the past, but now it is.

Moral of the story....take your voter id card with you if you want to buy anything at J&G.

Not trying to bust your balls or anything..... but when you change your address you can get a new license issued with the correct address for $4.00.

It's worth it..... and not just for gun purchases.

That's a J&G policy, so they can make it mean anything they want.

Old license w/photo establishes identity.
Voter reg card w/address establishes residence.

Combined, they work for whatever J&G wants to use it for.

They're right.

I think what the salesperson may have been trying to say is that if you have a current acceptable ID card, like an AZ drivers license, then they can use your vehicle registration with the current address (but no PO boxes).

I talked to two BATF agents about this a few years ago, and ithey stated that is what they want.  I doubt they clerk at J&G wanted his dog killed.

p.s.

J&G used to photocopy drivers licenses for ammunition purchases, they are very paranoid  strict.

I was looking at the Russian capture K98 Mausers.  They also have some very used and abused Turkish Mausers, but I didn't look at them closely.

The K98s look like they are in nice condition for a surplus rifle.  The finish is mostly intact (a few scratches here and there).  The wood is anywhere from acceptable to nice.  I didn't see any that were horrible or any that were like new.  The bore was shiny with sharp rifling.  The clerk said some of the receivers have minor pitting/discoloration from blood stains, but I didn't see it one the few I looked at.

Eventually I'll pick one up if I'm ever back in Prescott and happen to have my voter id card with me.

Anyone know how far they are from the Prescott airport? I've been thinking of flying up there to buy some ammo and look at other goodies.

Not too far but I do think it's too far to walk...especially with ammo.

It's about a 10-15 minute drive, if you don't have any traffic to worry about.

I've spent a ton of money there, and I always got the impression that they had been screwed with by the feds on those points, so they dotted the T's and crossed the I's to keep the .gov types happy.

I was an army brat born in Germany. They made me right a statement and sign that I was a US citizen. Guess  should have brought my Passport to.

I would never do business with that place again.  They're the worst example of customer service in the business.

J&G is always strict like that.

Basically they have kickass prices, and do a high volume of sales.  Because their volujme is high, they have been hassled by the feds in the past.  So they maintain strict regulations, to avoid anything that might possibly get them into trouble.

If you don't like it, thank our government. hinking.gif

Why was your experience so bad?

They've always treated me well, with the exception of being sticklers on the gov't forms. (I've had to fill one out three times before, because I was an idiot and couldn't follow the directions.)

I wouldn't say their customer service is top notch by any means, but t's certainly not the worst I've ever seen either.

I've bought a few things from J&G with no problems. However my buddy tried to buy a CZ-75 and his ID did not have his current address and they would not sell it to him, so I wanted to buy the CZ and refused to sell it to me saying that I was trying to buy it for my friend.  The whole expirence wasn't that big a deal. Just my $0.02.

I live in Tempe and have driven all the way up to J&G before and had the same problem. They told me I had to have a current address on my Drivers License. I asked where the closest DMV was and it was only about 3 miles up the road. So off I headed.. They probably didn't inform you of this option because it was the weekend.  Took about 30 minutes, I had what I needed! I got back to J&G, finished my purchase and left happy. They are jerks about the forms because they do MASS business over the internet and at their store. They are being watched and checked all the time to make sure everything is LEGAL That's all.... Who can blame them?? Even a little error could close the shop.

When I was stationed out at Luke from '94-'97 I never did like when they'd take my drivers license for ammo purchases as it was the only place that did that.  Whenever I bought a rifle I had to show my military ID and a copy of orders since I had an Iowa drivers license, they wanted to take my military ID to the back room and told them no because you just can't give someone your military ID due to security reasons.  They never did like that but they copied my drivers license and a copy of orders instead.  I remember there was a red haired woman that worked there and was as nice as could be, her birthday was October 24 same as mine.  I remember going to their store in Tempe and it was real handy but didn't stay open that long.  I remember they had a hell of a sale on Ugandan .308 ammo that was linked and came in a 1400 or 1600 round wooden crate, I've still got a full crate of it and it's heavy as hell so it doesn't get moved often.  Great cheap ammo for blasting, but it is quite a hot load, and a magnet practically flies to that silver colored bullet.  I wished I would have bought more of it but still have the full crate and 400 or so loose rounds.  The wooden crate is marked: "Property of Ugandan Ministry of Defense, Idi Amin" or something very similar to that.  I miss going to J&G as I'd drive the Senator Highway on the way back towards Phoenix and drive up thru Wickenburg and Yarnell on the way there...damn I miss the mountains!

I placed a special order for a shotgun that they said they would get it in in about 4 days.  Well they lost the order.  I called no less than 6 times checking on my order before they finally admitted that they "misplaced" the order.  Over one month after my original order, they had it in (Davidsons had it in stock the whole time).  No apologies, no explanations.  When I asked, someone said, "Oh yeah, that was handled by someone who really doesn't do that kind of thing".

Another "oh ya, by the way", If you have one of the old lisence that doesn't have the digital picture on it, the DMV won't even recognize it for renewal! you have to have your birth certificate! As of October, they are no longer accepted as gov't ID. You can still drive though! Go figure.

Ask me HOW I know this!
