| Anyone dove hunters and where ya going this September??? |
I'm not sure where I'm going, it seems like every year one of my spots gets chewed up by a different city (incorperated) it's getting so I have to drive 2 hours to find a place to shoot dove. I'll be somewhere on the first though, there's nothing quite as exciting as Sept. 1 when the sun tops the hills. |
I have to agree with Mouch. I've heard there are some places to go out deep in the Avenues. I remember going out past the dairy farm in Chandler back in the day, but everywhere you look a new dev. is going up. |
The first place I ever hunted Dove was about 3 miles north of Shea on Scottsdale rd, that Sabas and DQ that are there where there then and they were the very end of the city. That was when I was 11, 29 years ago.
Last year we went out to 200+ avenue and Bell, a place we used to hunt often. Well it's now be co-opted by Suprise and you can't hunt there. Hell, it will be 15 years before Suprise grows into that area, but we can't hunt there. Why is it that a city can just buy up land like that? Peoria did the same thing with all the land around Lake Pleasant, now you can't even hunt quail out there any more. |
I have some of the best dove hunting in my backyard by the cotton fields... I walk 1/4 mile and I'm in the zone But, I don't hunt dove anymore...Pain in the butt |
South is ------> that way. *snicker* Sorry, I'm not sure what area he's talking about, so I can't help, just make fun. |
My brother uses them in green chili. Honestly, when I was younger I loved the taste of dove and we used to make "Dove and Dumplins" (chicken and dumplins, but with dove). Now i find them a bit gamey. You need to clean them and get them on ice quickly, that will help some. This year I'm going to try a recipe that a lot of people say really helps; de-bone the breast, wrap the breast meat and a piece of green chili or jalepeno with a piece of bacon, and grill it, smothered in BBQ sauce. |
I use a 12 gauge (my 870) or this year I'm gonna try my new stoeger SXS 20 gauge. If you've never shot dove, you'll be suprised at how tricky these damn birds can be, the are the F-16's of the bird world, I've seen them duck and dodge through 3 people shooting at them. They are not as easy as you might think. |
They are tricky. I use a remington 1100 12g. |
An air rifle if you're shoting them out of your back yard. ![]() For field shooting you can't beat a Remington 870 Express in 20 gauge. Nice and light for getting the tricky bastards in the air, and more punch than a .410. |
Sounds pretty Fing good to me! |
|
I use a RWS 48 .22 air rifle around the dairy here. Bunch of cow feed eating, shitting pests they are! I think I'll go shoot a couple of hundred in a few minutes. Oh, for some really sweet air rifles, check out Airguns of Arizona in Gilbert. I always buy pellets from them, and the pre-charged air rifles that they sell are really cool. www.airgunsofarizona.com |

I haven't been dove hunting in a while. I used to hunt at Scottsdale and Bell, NW corner behind the Arabian horse ranches. I don't think it would be legal to shoot there now. I do have the 3 day weekend off of work. Would not mind traveling a bit to meet up and shoot dove with somebody. I guess I will have to get my 1100 out and see if it still works. |
I can't remember the exact milage, but drive south of the Town of Maricopa on Maricopa road for a few miles and turn off anywhere into the agricultural fields. I usually try and find a spot near some tree's. I usually pass by a indian casino on the way. Hope this helps. If you see a couple of guys near a maroon toyota tacoma blazing through shells and not bagging anything, stop by and say hi. |
I hear they're good but EXPEN$IVE.... Any truth to that? Mike |

Kind of a screwed up deal out my way. The injuns own alot of the land down by the river and the fields. Every other square mile, sort of a checker board type thing. They ofcourse want to sell you a permit to hunt on their land at 25 bucks a species, I think I will head out towards yucca/alamo area. |
Shove your thumb up its ass and rip the breast off. Not really the ass but the bottom of the breast plate. You will know it when you feel it. Rip it straight off pull skin and feathers off clip ONE wing off with scissors and drop in a bucket. Take it home and clean up as desired. |
