Moved to the north side of Cincy last year and need to get my OH CCW permit going. Curious if there are any classes/instructors that stand out above the rest that Google turns up.
They all seem to hover around or just above $100, so price isn't a big concern - more concerned about getting stuck with a shitty speaker/instructor for 8 hours... Right now the front runner would be the class at Point Blank in Blue Ash, just because that's the range that I frequent the most often. Any suggestions for places that you liked or places I should avoid are appreciated. ETA: While I'm at it - where the hell can you shoot outdoors at a decent range around SW OH? Miami Rifle and Pistol Club seems about the only place, and they have a solid 3 year wait

| I took mine at Little Miami Tactical in Morrow. It was a great class, but it looks like they're out of business now. This website may help you: Ohioccwforums.org |

You don't have to be a member of Miami Rifle & P to shoot the matches. Go shoot some matches make friends get invited as a guest while you wait to become a member. I intend to hit some matches and check it out, thanks. I do a lot of load development/chrono work that is best done at a bench, though. |
| Miami rifle and pistol has the biggest range in the area I think. Other than that you can go up to Spring Valley. It can get crowded on weekends though. Other Clubs in the area are Middletown sportsme's club, Clinton Co. Farmers and Sportsmen (they have lots of matches). I was a member at Middletown. It's a typical boring bench range that caters to shotgun nerd and cowboy shooters mostly. I'm going to try to get into Clinton Co. Next myself. |

Clinton Co. is too far to make afternoon range trips feasible, so guess I'm stuck with Middletown or Spring Valley until they pull my name on the waiting list for MVRP. |

New NRA class format changes May 15th, will be a lot longer than 8 HR, rumor is it take more like 10-12 total with all of the online crap.
I just taught several classes the last couple weekends but I think I'm going to stop for now until the new format takes effect As for ranges target world and point blank are decent enough for a quick function check. Lake Baliee near New Miami is pretty laid back and let's ppl shoot in tactical gear, draw from a holster, etc... As long as it's not busy, but during the peak times it turns into a traditional stand/sit at the line and shoot at a single stationary target. Think it's $20 for the day, no membership required, open sat and Sunday noon to 5. I you are a member it's open 7 days a week no charge, except the $180 a year membership. I checked the place out, it's a little ghetto but for the price it's hard to beat. The ppl were a little weird, lot of anti gov crazy types. Also there is a bar on site...wtf? I ended up joining tactical intelegence group on the west side at Hamilton Cleves exit on 275. It's $420 a year which is the promotional rate, it will go up in he future, it's membership only access, they teach classes there and the owners and members seem classy. It's under construction right now so lots of mud to walk through, but they have pistol and rifle pits, steel spinners, cars to shoot at and encourage tactics type shooting, so you can move and shoot, practice cover and concealment while shooting and everyone there does the same so you don't get funny looks. Open Fri, Sat, Sun, but are suppose to be adding another 2 days at the end of May. Will eventually be a self serve location with keycard access but that's prob a ways off. |

The CHL classes are merely a way to punch your ticket for the license. Thinking you'll get any skills from them is delusional. But you'll get your license. Take the pistol courses from TDI Ohio over in Adams Country and come away with a decent background -- and you'll get your license. Yeah this requires some time and effort. And expense.
Ohio training requirement is a joke. Guys in Pennsylvania just walk into the Sheriff's office and come out with licenses. No training needed. No need to notify the police you're armed. No mass of shooting by licensee's either. Now there's a bill before the Ohio legisature to to allow active duty military (only) to carry in Ohio without a license. Members of this forum are probably better trained than 99% of active duty military. Excluded the reserve components who must meet the exact same standards (as lame as they are). And retired policemen get exempted too despite many of them being so poorly trained it's scary. I'm a Constitutional Carry guy but you're fooling yourself you can handle a pistol in a gunfight without professional training. Didn't some guy with a license (and apparently no skills) just get killed trying to stop a robbery or something? -- Chuck |

Not sure if too far, but good place to shoot. Lot of rental guns available. It's an hour north of Cincny |

Thanks for the suggestions. If nothing else, I have some new places to stop and check out when traveling around for work.
Point Blank was running a sale for the class at $80, so I signed up for one the other evening. Even though price wasn't my primary concern it seemed like a no brainer for checking the box and moving forward with the appropriate paper work. I got my lifetime permit in Indiana 10 years ago - requirements are a little different for Ohio... |

CHL laws are very strange in some states.
My Ohio CHL is no-good in Wisconsin (issued too early). My Pennsylvania non-resident license IS accepted in Wisconsin even though PA doesn't require any competence at all for a walk-in, walk-out license. Going to a college reunion in Wisconsin next month but I can't carry during the Illinois section of the drive 'cuz IL accepts no others. -- Chuck |
