My son may be accepting an intern position at Rovisys in Aurora next summer.  We need to start looking at housing options.  He's going to check with them, but I figured you guys in the area would know as well.  We live in PA just over the state line near Beaver Falls.  The drive would be about 1.25 hours one-way, so a daily commute is an option, but it would be a bit of a grind.  He's only 20, so it wouldn't be a big deal I suppose.  Maybe he could rent a room/garage apt. somewhere, he won't be making the big arfcom bucks just yet.  Let me know what you think...

Thanks, OCG

A good option might be Kent state kids looking for a summer roommate. Many times one will go home for the summer but still have to cover the cost of the apartment.

If he wants to spend some $$, Barrington townhouses rent fully furnished apartments, by the quarter, but they ain't at all cheap. That's right in Aurora though. They also rent the standard unfurnished places as well.

Streetsboro is directly south of Aurora, and there is plenty of apartments in the 'boro. Cheap to above middle grade, also some trailers that I'm sure are rentable, along with a bunch of duplexes off rt 43 north of rt 14.

Kent State is definitely viable, it's the city south of Streetsboro, and they will be plenty of rooms or apartments available. Not that I condone drinking and driving, but you really don't want to do it in Kent, if the kid is so inclined.

You probably don't want to look north of Aurora, as there is not much availability, nor would it be cheap, but there are needles in haystacks.

One place that wouldn't be overly close to Aurora, but not to far either, and would be cheap considering its location, is Surrey Park apartments in Hudson.

It's right next to a Starbucks and very walkable to downtown Hudson, which is a hipster paradise, and not expensive considering the alternatives. If your son parties with the hipster crowd, that would definitely be a place I would check out.

Feel free to IM me with specific questions, I know the area pretty well.

Mantua will be cheap, but probably not super appealing to a 20 year old looking  to rent. For qualification I have family that lives in Garrettsviille and went  to Hiram for a bit. Kent,  Streetsboro, or even Macedonia will probably be better and keep him from racking up miles on his car driving all over North Eastern Ohio trying to find something to do

Guys, thanks very much for all of this.  Once I know he's accepting the offer, I'll IM you for more detail.  Unlike me at 20, my son is not a drinker/party-er.  He has a serious girlfriend, he'll probably come home on the weekends.  We're looking for the cheapest options...

We're not all hipsters in Hudson, but yep there are droves of them.

Beaver Falls is great, but the tolls will kill any cost savings unless you are going 51 to 11 to 80/76 then SR14 to 43.

Stay away from the stuff behind the Kmart in the 'boro.

Good advice posted above.

Thanks.  The no-toll route adds about 15 minutes, 1.5 hours door-to-door.  That's too much.  I'll make sure to add the tolls to the commute calc.  Hopefully the company has some suggestions, surely this has come up before....

Tolls?  What tolls?!  E-Zpass (on dear old Dad's credit card) makes tolls disappear like magic.  Just ask my wife and daughter!

Aurora ain't Hudson but both are pretty yuppy and have been forever.

Streetsboro probably has the most affordable housing.  I'd look for housing catering to college students who vacate for the summer.  May have to sub-let.

being from the area, I would suggest Streetsboro. especially the townhomes on frost road. they're fairly  inexpensive. Kent would be a good option but the commute is a real pain in the ass, as there is no quick way to get to Kent. I live in Mantua and worked in Kent for 2 years. it took 22 minutes no matter how I sliced it and I do not drive slow. there are some rentals in mantua but they are either houses $$$$. or dumps $$. Streetsboro is ridiculous during rush hour especially on RT14.

Hey! All these posts and suggestions are good, but MAN--if we have another "Classic Winter" here in NE Ohio, your son ain't gonna make the drive from Beaver Falls (where I used to fish with my Pa a lot!) in 1.25 hours. Yeah, he could prolly call in on the real bad "snow days," but how long will that last with his employer?

We is famous here for yonder "Lake Effect" snow--big Canadian freezing temp low pressures, sweeping down from Canuck-land, then across un-frozen warm moist Lake Erie, picking up tons of moisture, which then dumps FEET (not inches) of the White Death on the East and South East part of NE Ohio--yeah, Aurora is sometimes, but not often, included. It's still a hazard. We call it the "Primary Snow Belt."

If he snags the job here, get him re-settled in one of the noted areas-above. Make sure he has either a 4WD or front wheel drive vehicle with very good tires.

Roads here in winter (especially nightly from 0200-0500) can get clobbered with snow and ice. The ODOT road crews are good, but there's only so much they can do.

Our PA friend who worked at Allstate Insurance Co. in Hudson, drove in everyday from New Castle PA! Every day for 15 years. It was no picnic in Winter, aka: White Knuckle Time.

Notice on this map how Aurora gets the worst of "The White Stuff."

If he's looking for an apartment rental, Streetsboro is probably cheaper than anything in Aurora. Closer than Kent by 1/2.

We used to rent a place near Sea World when we worked there over the summers.  Wonder if those cheap shitty houses are still there.  That's near Aurora.
But realistically, I'd suggest Kent.  Close by, and still fun to be had.

Reminderville?  I drove through there from Twinsburg this summer because of some road construction. That place has built up with newer homes and most of the older dumps have been updated. It's not the same place it was 25 years ago.

Plus, the road there is now 4 lanes, brand new--super!

Pretty far from hipster, I won't say that I fit in this town.  There aren't many of us.  Nice place, but beta hipstervile as anything.   No McMansion, neighbors give me dirty looks when I ride my dirt bike in the yard.  They'd have a stroke if they knew I'm typically carrying a G19 24/7/365,  let alone an AR in the minivan when I'm hauling my munchkin crew around.  A lot of money in this town, but equal parts limp wristedness.  If they aren't hipster, they are a form of the character Bill Lumbergh from Office Space.  Only decent friend I have in town spends his evenings (after taking care of his munchkins) wrenching on his drag car and pounding Natty Lights......then again were are in that general redneck area that was mentioned earlier in this post.

It's a safe town though, great for kids, and if you live in the right part of town, you can walk to a lot of stuff.  People are generally very nice.

Beats the hell out of living near Youngstown.

Easy there, I'm in Stow just over the border from Hudson, the other side of those tracks!

I work in Aurora and have to second the advice given here but I'd also suggest looking in Stow and Cuyahoga Falls as well. CF options will be cheaper and will only add a couple minutes onto the commute. Turnpike access is easy from there and makes the commute quick and easy, even during the winter.
