Well it is time to re-up for those who got them as soon as they were available.  Anybody renew yet? What is required for a 2nd renew?  Do we just need to take in our current CCW like for a driver's license or do we need training cert, pics etc like first time around?

Thanks!

Just take your current valid CHL and your application and payment... No Need    to take any additional training or certificates!

What about pics?  Is that part of app?  It has been 5yrs, my memory is weak.

Yes to pic. May want to call them. Mine would do an extra pic for an additional $5.

From what I'm seeing a reservation or appointment is necessary in most counties.  Lorain County, as am example is only giving out 15 appointments a week!  Cuyahoga County is working very smoothly right now and seems to be on a 15 minute schedule but an appointment will probably still be scheduled for a month from your phone call.  Regardless of the county check the sheriff's website for complete details.

The license can be renewed 90 days prior to expiration and anytime afterwards.  There is a 30 day grace period after expiration during which you can carry but the expired license is all you need for renewal even months afterwards.

The latest form is on the Ohio Attorney General's website.

Just to add to what Chuck said, while you can renew 90 days early, keep in mind that they will make your new expiration date 5 years from the date of renewal, not 5 years from the date of expiration of your old permit.

That is correct.  If you can pick your date (I was asked for a preference in Cuyahoga) call early and get a date in your "grace period"  to extend the next renewal a couple of weeks.  But even 90 days early won't matter 5 years from now.

Update: Fairfield County Sheriff's Office today...they are so busy with not only renews, but a HUGE run of first timers that they are now scheduling appts for JULY!  While that is bad if you are trying to get in, it is great to see so many new CCWs being applied for!

Fortunately the ladies working there are incredibly competent, professional, friendly, and (I can't speak for them), but seem to be on the side of law abiding folks carrying.

Also and most importantly to me,  I was fortunate to be there right after a couple of people did not show up for appts, so I got in.  Right place, right time.

Now, to see how many days for the renew to go thru.  Keep ya posted.

Thanks to all for answers.

To renew, bring these with you::
Completed app, or complete it while there.
SS card.
driver's license.
current ccw.
$50 cash or check.

****Update:  even though they are busy, they are efficient.  Took them only 2 days to issue the renewal.

Same in Franklin Couinty -- when I called Franklin County at the beginning of the month, the soonest appointment available was middle of June.

Probably not, but then again, it put me in that 2-3 week window where I had to have a competency certificate before HB495 took effect.

Past tense.    I was in the same "window" but you can renew any time after the license expires.  Just can't carry past 30 days after the date.

For others:  Save yourself some trouble and download and complete the application before your arrival.  Even with an appointment you're wasting everyone's time completing the application standing at the window like the bozos at Taco Bell who wait until the clerk asks for their order to decide!

As a sidebar the PA license adds many states not covered by Ohio and is a 10 minute process with your drivers license and Ohio CHL (and $20 cash) in Mercer County just east of Youngstown.   Check their schedule.  Walk in, no appointments.  No "training."  Xerox your licenses before arrival.  You need two references.  Some PA counties make you jump thru hoops but not Mercer (or Adams).
