Is Camp Perry still an active military base?
I need to go there for some business next week, while I'd rather not leave MI without a carry gun I don't really want to run afoul of on base firearms regulations. Any advice? Thanks, |

I was one of the soldiers who guarded Camp Perry full time into they stopped guarding the post in 2006 and I still visit the CMP at least once a month. The front gate is not guarded so you can just drive on and leave it in your car while you shop. As far as legality goes you can CCW on Camp Perry as long as you do not enter a building.

No concealed carry is permitted on Camp Perry per state law. Your weapon must be unloaded and stored in your vehicle in accordance with Ohio law. If someone is caught carrying on state property they will not be warned, but turned over to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for prosecution.

| I went there to buy ammo a few years ago while on my way to my gun club. I was asked by the guards if I had any weapons in my vehicle. I told them that I had a trunk full as I was heading to my club. They just logged the weapons and held them in the guard house until I was ready to leave. Really nice guys and we chatted about my firearms for awhile as they were putting the weapons back in my trunk. |

Observe and follow the instructions on the signs.
Camp Perry is an Ohio National Guard post, not a US Army post. It is an Open Post (meaning you just drive in) most of the time although it may be restricted during some military training. There is no law prohibiting weapons properly secured in your vesicle on state property (there is in state owned buildings) in Ohio. Concealed carry may (or may not) be permitted. If prohibited a sign will note this. No one is going to search your car. -- Chuck |
