Thinking about retiring to Kentucky. A place an hour or so out of Lexington would suit me and my horses.

What's the good, bad and ugly about Kentucky?

How are the folks in general?

Where is the state headed?

Taxes? (I hear there's a weird "possession" or use tax on vehicles each year based upon their trade in value)

Housing and land prices?

Utility costs?

THANKS!

Wouldn't this be better off if it was posted in the Kentucky forum?

Yep. thanks for suggesting it, but I already did.

Just wanted to get the opinions of Ohioans like me who have been down there, or lived in KY, hunted there, etc.

knowledge is power...and more knowledge is more power.

I was born and raised in Georgetown, Ky (12 miles north of Lex). Only moved to this god forsaken state (Ohio) because of school and the fact that my fiancé bought a condo on the wrong side of the river. Thus the screen name

Central KY is a great place to live. The people are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Hell, it's so nice that William Shatner bought a horse farm in Lex or thereabouts. I HIGHLY recommend KY, especially for your equestrian interests. Firearms laws are very reasonable, no mag limits or any such AWB BS. Budsgunshop.con has physical stores in Lex and Paris, and this is the biggest reason that I cry myself to sleep every time I open my wallet to see a shiney new OH drivers license...

Cost of living is low, taxes are very reasonable. Property ranges from practically free to very expensive depending on where you are.

Just put a big old' UK (note: never UofL or OSU) sticker on your truck and you'll fit right in! Make the move and you'll wonder how you survived in OH. Just my extremely biased $0.02.

I too am from THE O-H-I-O but I did live in Georgetown KY, just as the previous poster, for many years. My Pawpaw still lives there in Georgetown, it is just north of Lexington and its a much nicer place to live than in Lex. I really liked the area and home prices were VERY reasonable. Taxes are about on average but like the OP was saying the Car tax it something that I will never understand. It just seems like a huge rip!! I bought a new car a few years before I moved there and when trying to register it they wanted me to pay taxes (AGAIN) on the value of the car!!! Besides that I cant think of a better place to raise your Horses, after all it is the horse capital!!
