I have a quick question for the Ohio HAM crew.

I would like to get my technician license and live in Columbus. I have been looking around at classes and the nearest class on the ARRL site is Mansfield and is 2 weekends. The other classes span 3 months and would require me to drive 50-90 miles one way each class (The Plains and Mt. Vernon). I like the idea of a 1 day class with prep work like the Dayton class at the Hamvention but I don't want to wait until the middle of May.

Do any of the Columbus clubs offer classes local? I am not apposed to doing the self study but would like to have some face time with an experienced HAM person even if only for a couple hours to get some experience.

Thanks for your help.

Jeff,
The test for the technician class license is not very difficult and I would recommend the self-study approach. Both me and my wife went and took our tech exams with only about a weeks worth of preparation which was all obtained from the internet. The best way to learn is to get your ticket and get involved on your local repeaters and nets. The amateur radio community (my experience) is all about getting people on the air and doing it correctly.

I self studied with the ARRL guide, and took a ton of practice exams on the net.  Some theory is confusing, and it's just easier to memorize it, an figure it w/ an elmer later.  Best thing to do is test out, get on the air and lurk a bit to see how things work, then give a whirl.
