I'm about to renew my license and was wondering if anybody knew what information is contained in the magnetic strip? Anything in there about an individual having a CHL or FFL? Anybody ever have their license scanned by other than a LEO? What purpose does the barcode serve? My brother lives in Commiefornia and tells me banks and bussinesses scan his license regularly. He also tells me the license out there was recently changed to contain much more info. I asked if this had anything to do with the National ID but he had never heard of it.

My CCW instructor, a retired Cincinnati PO told us that by virtue of receiving a CCW permit all of the license plates connected to the permit holder were flagged as issued to a CCW permit holder. The instructor told us to explain to our families, particulary the kids that the police would be on notice in the event of a pullover and that they should act appropriately. We were told to explain to family members that they should explain that the CCW permit holder is their husband / father. We were also told to volunteer that we were CCW permit holders if we were pulled over as soon as we were "greeted" by the PO and to advise whether or not a firearm was in the car and if so where. There is no requirement to say anything about CCW if there is no gun present, but we were advised to volunteer the information as a courtesy to the PO.
The other instructor told us that he gets pulled over regularly because of his work driving / driving habits. He claimed that more often than not, he only gets a warning after having a friendly conversation about what model he carries, etc. His claim was that the PO's see us as good guys. Hope so. |

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I know firsthand, I had it happen to me. A neighbors boyfriend was busted for drunk driving in her car in the neighborhood ( YA that made me happy) But she came to my house and ask if I could drive the car home that was just down the street. The cops would not let her because she could not find her DL. The cop asked for my DL I gave it to him and the first thing that came out of the dispatchers mouth was I had CHL, The cop being the ever so brave officer backs up and ask me with his hand on the gun if I had a gun on me and that I was breaking the law by not telling him I had my CHL. I made him aware that I did not have my gun on me and I do not have to tell him anything if I do not have it. The ever so smart officer informed me that I still was breaking the law by not telling him I had a CHL I politely told him he was wrong and he need to refresh himself on Ohio law, he did not like that one Now the above may seem like it was a nightmare but really it was over in 5 minutes. I was told to go to the station and file a complaint for menacing because he had his hand on his firearm, That would have been hard to prove, but if he had drawn his gun that would have been different. |

We had a car/deer out front of my last employer, I called to have LE show up with carcass tag so I could claim the deer... OSP shows up, I was kneeling at his driver door in the parking lot while he was verifying my ID and writing carcass tag, when he looks up and ask me if I did indeed have carry license, and if I was cuurently carrying.. I told him I did have a CCW license, and I told him no to the current carrying, I am not allowed to carry at work. Never said anymore.
Anything that is registered to a valid CCW holder will come back when checked by the officer, be it a motor vehicle tag, boat/pwc registration, or simple ID check walking down the street. |
| i sort of understand telling leo of a chl, if pulled over, but i do not believe that every time i come into contact with an officer i am obliged to offer this information if not being the perp in an investigation. after all they certainly do have access to the info. and from my experience the leo really don't seem to care much. if anything they are glad to see you are on the "good" side of the law. as far as i know the law is really specific about being pulled over while driving... could be wrong here but i'm not sure. perhaps giving your chl along with your dl as a courtesy would be nice. |

I am currently working as a 911 Operator/Police Dispatcher. I run queries every day as part of the job. A query on a license plate or operator's license does advise when someone is a CHL holder. Edit: v––Yeah, just CHL - not FFL Would a license plate or operator's license query show only an Ohio CHL or does it show other state's CHL as well? |

Quoted: Would a license plate or operator's license query show only an Ohio CHL or does it show other state's CHL as well? I've only seen Ohio CHL's come back with Ohio plates & OL's. I wouldn't quote me that it's a guarantee that an Ohio resident with an out of state CHL wouldn't show up in a response though. |
| I worked at a place that had a scanner on one ofthe computers. I decided to see what all of my cards had on it. The license had the name, address, license number stuff. Nothing more. I believe that when the LEO scans it, that scan is sent in to be compared to the database. That is when they will know if you have the CHL. Other places that just use it to quickly import your basic info will not get it. |
| I was told in my CCW class (with current LEO instructors) that if I'm ever stopped I should let the officer know that I'm a CCW holder even if I don't have a gun with me at the time BECAUSE the officer WILL be able to tell that I have CCW license when he runs my other info. on his computer and will feel safer and be more friendly if I put his mind at ease. |

I wish you would have. I'm getting a bit tired of this county becoming more of a police state all the time, and the enforcer's of said law's not knowing them. here's a kinda on topic thread that show's more of the same AR15.COM :: Forums :: Need to remove LE markings from a AR lower. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=19&t=266996 I know some of you are going to side with the LEO's with " don't let a few bad apples..." well I disagree. they are the ones with the gun's and power and the 'their word against your's', they have the advantage. it's not like having a bad encounter with a cashier at Walmart, give's all cashier's a bad image, with LE it's much different. YMMV |

This was recently in the news re CCW. It presents an interesting question. If you are a passenger in a car that is pulled over, how far do you go to immediately get the PO's attention so you can inform him of your CCW permit and your possession of a firearm? My instincts would tell me to keep quiet and not interrupt the PO while he deals with the driver. Doing otherwise would probably piss the PO off, but read the article below and you may think differently.
http://www.oxfordpress.com/p/content/oh/story/news/local/2009/01/30/op013009police.html Student charged for carrying concealed revolver A 22-year-old University of Cincinnati student learned the legal nuances of a concealed carry permit the hard way, after Oxford police arrested him over a .38 caliber revolver hidden in his pocket. Udoamaka Nwamu, 7752 Montgomery Road #14, Cincinnati, was issued a citation for carrying a concealed weapon on Jan. 25, despite possessing a concealed carry permit. Nwamu reportedly did not inform officers of the weapon immediately upon making contact with them, which police said is legally required. Police pulled over a vehicle driving without its headlights activated shortly after 3 a.m., with records revealing the driver had been operating with a suspended license. An officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle, observing Nwamu seated in the back seat with his hands in his jacket pocket. The driver was notified that the vehicle would be towed, with the passengers asked to exit the vehicle and turn around so officers to pat them down. An officer asked Nwamu if he had any weapons on him prior to checking him, at which point Nwamu reportedly said he was carrying a revolver. Officers handcuffed Nwamu and confiscated a .38 caliber revolver loaded with five rounds from a holster in his pocket. Nwamu told police he possessed a concealed carrying permit, which was located in one of his ID holders. He was taken to the Oxford Police Department, issued a citation for carrying a concealed weapon and later released. |

The barcode contains, (IIRC) your License number and the info above your head in the photo (which contains info about what license bureau you got your license at, which employee served you, and which transaction you were that day). FFL info is not retained by the state in any way. Your CHL info appears in the statewide LE database, which is accessible for LE purposes ONLY. Other use is a FELONY. |

Because i scan license bar code to do background checks i can whole heatedly say that i can pull all the info on the front of your card off the magnetic strip. However when running a DL#/SSN/Exact name will result in me seeing your CCH and CCW info very quickly. I sometimes use OHLEG for this, however most in car tenminals have LEADS/OHLEG available. Also the magnetic strips are also very unreliable, they fail to produce accurate data many times with misspellings or just off the wall characters, they also sometimes don't read out propper DOB. What information isn't stored on your DL i can access in seconds from a computer terminal. YAY for LE |
| you used to be able to swipe your license on certain credit card machines and you would get a quick look at whats on there, Basically it was all the information on the front recorded on the strip for ease identification, But could easily hold much more info on that little strip of tape... try swiping it if you have a friend with a credit card machine you will see much of the info on the stripe |

When a copper runs a CHL holder into the MDT, the rest of the guys he works with will get a message showing the same thing on their MDT as a precaution. (at least at my dept we do) So....if you stop someone with a CHL, all the other officers on duty with you know it too? That seems pretty safe. If an officer is a little having a slow day/night, he can make his way towards the traffic stop in case back up may be needed. |
