Hi guys,

I want to start coyote hunting in NW Ohio. I see a few here and there in the area. I'm not sure where to start.

As far as equipment goes the only thing I think I would need to get started is a caller.

Any tips on how you got started calling or any good books to read? When is the best time to call? Dawn, noon, dusk, sunny, overcast?

You get the idea.

Thanks, Shane

Right now is the best time, it's cold and they are using more energy to keep warm.
Morning noon and night is when they are looking for food so anytime will work.
You should be as scent free and well camouflaged as you can get.  The caller is also very necessary.  I've heard that if you tie a chicken upside down in a tree that that will attract them like fat people to a free buffet.    What kind of rifle are you using?

Well thanks for the info. I wondered about scent containment.

As far as rifles go I can use my AR with open sights or a T/C Contender carbine in .223 with a scope.

Funny about the chickens. I mentioned to my wife a couple weeks ago that we should raise some chickens or ducks.

Too bad you are not in SW Ohio.  I could make you a good deal on some spent layers (Chickens).......

I gots a pile of aged deer meat in the freezer to be used as bait, come and get it if you is going to the  Goodman show this weekend...

Was starting to make jerky for Christmas, thawed it, and it was freezer burnt, brown, and smell, put back in freezer for coyote bait.

RPGJoe,

Hey thanks for the offer. I don't think I'll be able to get out for a few weeks anyway but I'll sure keep you in mind. Whats your location? I'm in Henry County, near Napoleon.

Wow, sounds like you got them pretty thick over there. Are the furs worth much these days?

Maybe we can get together. I'm about 30 minutes West of BG.

No $$ for a caller at this time though. Christmas bills, heat bills, work is slow. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Dont know what the fur price is right now. We mostly shoot and let them lay. For me it isnt worth the hassle to skin them. I just enjoy the trigger time.

I have been using a fox pro.  Last Sat I killed 3 on one stand.  My go to call this time of year is a coon fight with a jack in distress.  This warm weather will make hunting slow but next week it should pick up agian.  If calls are not giving you any luck try leaving some bad hamburger tied up in a tree.

They are also mating right now so howling will work during the day also you will get the big mature ones to come in.
