I just finished buidling my first AR15 (just the lower, got the upper from Del-ton).  I live in Central Ohio and was looking for a source for low price ammo.  Also, since the weather is getting colder I will probably be doing most of my shooting at Blackwing or New Albany and no steel is permitted.  I am planning on hitting the PRO gun show after Thanksgiving.  Are there usually any deals there?

Thanks!

I never thought I'd say this, but it's damn near the same price to shoot 223 as any of the oddball calibers out there. Heck, I even saw 222 priced cheaper than 223 the other day! It's hard to believe that it costs the same to shoot a 308 rifle as it does to shoot a MP44 in 7.92 x 33mm! I'd rather shoot the latter myself!

It's not a good time to be looking for a deal on ammo. There aren't any. Plan to spend 45¢–55¢ per round (or more!) for decent 223 or 308. It used to be that your best deal on ammo could be had by purchasing ammo by the case(s.) Not any more. Suppliers know they can get a premium for the popular calibers.

I feel sorry for all of you guys who are just getting into the hobby without a stash of ammo stored away from all of the surplus that came in over the last 15 years. Here's hoping we're just in a lull and that there'll be plenty more soon enough...and that we'll all be joking about the crazy priced 50¢ 308 ammo of 2007!

PRVI stuff can be found cheap on some sites.
Personally I buy a few boxes of UMC at wallmart every week.

Get out there and suffer in the cold! That's what battle rifles are FOR!

NASR & Blackwing are for girls who are afraid their nipples will show when the air gets chilly!

Nothing better than getting snot-sickles while you're hurling lead downrange, the Ohio ARFcommers will revoke your man-card if you don't step outside in the cold with a gun in hand.

AIM Surplus has brass cased Prvi for $66 a pack (200 rounds) The the greatest deal but the are good people and the Prvi has been very reliable for me. Hope that helps.

Swingsets right, go to aim surplus and buy some wolf and go outside and shoot.  Besides after you pay for the brass ammo and range time you could have bought another rifle.  Get cold and shoot steel.  Oh my bad I just checked aim and they are out of wolf.  I'd just wait until they get it back in.  Dayton isn't that far of a drive.

Right now Wally World has 55gr UMC for $6.47/20 or $323.50/1000 (pretax)

Cheaper than Dirt has 55gr and 62gr  Wolf for $5.97/20 or $298.50/1000 (Surplus is VERY expensive. $299/600 $499/820) (shipping is around $18)

AIM's Privi is $325/100 (pre-shipping)(about $13 shipping to me)

Midway is actually pretty good on Wolf $4.99/20 $250/1000 (both 55gr & 62gr) with estimated shipping (to me) of $14.91 for a total of around ~$265 shipped. Not TOO bad.

Sportsman's Guide has Bosnian Surplus for $284.97/600 and Wolf Steel for $219/1000. Wolf Brass .233 (XM193) is $319. Wold Brass 55gr is $449/1000. Winchester (Olin) 62gr is $499/1000. Wold 500 round spam can of 55gr $119. S&B 55gr $388.50/1000. (all pre-shipping ~$17.99)

Really, it looks like you're best deals on steel will be around $230 shipped and your best deals on brass ammo will be about a hundred more.

I like the brass ammo, because I can reload it, but at the price difference, the Wolf looks pretty tempting. Seeing that .223 brass is going for around $15/100 new now, that's $150 in brass. If you reload them only a couple of times, you get your money back in use. I might tip toward the brass, myself.

You'll need to talk to my wife about my man-card.  I haven't seen that thing for years...

I guess I can bundle up to save some money on ammo.  I reload 12ga to support my trap shooting habit and have watched the price of lead shot skyrocket.  I've got plenty of shotshells stashed, but no rifle ammo.

I live pretty close to Blackwing, but I don't know of any outdoor rifle ranges near me.  Any suggestions?

get your C&R license, make 30 or so copies and send one to graf and sons(www.grafs.com). I've bought my last 5 out of 7 ammo orders from them. The price you see is the price shipped add  3% for credit card orders. The customer service is great, I've never waited longer than six days for an order(christmas time last year).

You're welcome to come shoot with the Black Swamp Carbine Group. Also check out the group Forum. Next shoot will be in Jan. Might as well learn to move and shoot with that new AR.
