Wife wants to go to Hearst Castle for her birthday.  She got me a red laminate stock set for my romy AK and a Glock 27 a couple of years ago, so my turn to treat.  Any decent hotels close by, and some good eats anyone know of or can recommend ?  We've never been there.

Nice cottages along the coast on the northern outskirts of Cambria. It's aweome up there; I mostly camp. But, weather can make a cottage much better for a weekend with the wife creature. Have fun up there!!

Many hotels along Moonstone Beach Drive (just west of PCH) north of Cambria and in the town of San Simeon (The Morgan, Best Western Plus - Cavalier Hotel,...)  Honestly, your chance of getting a bad hotel is pretty low.

The town of Cambria is chock-full of good places to eat.  Lynn's Restaurant comes to mind but there are many others, as well.

Just west of the entrance to Hearst Castle is a small cafe and an adjacent wine tasting room.  The little cafe makes great sandwiches and has a small seating area.  You can also grab a sandwich, park in the public parking area, then have a picnic on the beach.

Well worth the trip. Be sure to bring a good camera and pack a lunch for the excursion to the castle. The snack prices up there are pretty high.

Stay in Morrow Bay.  More hotels / motels = better prices, and it's an easy drive to Hearst Castle.  Breakfast at the Coffee Pot Cafe in Morrow Bay.  Dinner at the Sow's Ear in Cambria.  But there's lots of resturants in Morrow Bay.

It is Morro Bay.  Named after the big rock in the harbor.  Morro is the spanish word for rock.  Morro bay tends to be very foggy.  Cambria has much less fog.  Great American Fish Company on the waterfront in Morro Bay has great food.  Blackened Halibut FTW.  There are many great places to eat in the area.

O.P. I don't know what you like to do but there is good hiking at Montana del Oro park ( 15 minutes south of Cambria ).  Morro Bay Natural History Museum is nice.  Walking in Cambria and Morro Bay are nice.  Elephant Seal rookery on Hwy 1 is interesting.  Piedras Blancas light house is a nice tour.  Hearst Castle is very nice.  Driving north on Hwy 1 is nice.  You could also drive south into San Luis Obispo ( 35 minutes or so )

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for the tips.  Hearst Castle was pretty cool.  Glad I gassed up in Paso Robles.  Gas in Cambria was $5.10 a gallon !  Morrow Bay was nice.  Very foggy on Saturday.  Couldn't see nothing from the castle.  All these haters of Cali have no clue how many different things there are to see and do here.  Lived here all my life, except for when in the military, and still haven't see everything.

Where did you stay and where did you eat, anything of note?

Stayed at the Best Western.  We ate at a place called Manta Rey.  Steak was good, place was kinda small.  Big Sur Cafe was pretty good.  We want to go back and spend more time checking out the beach, etc. when the weather gets nice again.  I heard about the elephant seals gathering near there in the winter, might be cool to check out.

The San Simeon State Beach is just outside of Cambria and is a real nice place to stay.  Beach is situated such that it doesn't get much in the way of kayakers, wind-surfers, etc.  Also too cold for most normal beach activities.  So it doesn't get over run with rowdy campers.  Too much kelp for really good surf fishing.  Some times no hits, one time I got 6 surf perch in about 15 minutes before sunset got too dark to continue.
