I have a Mossberg 500 with only a pistol grip on it. I want to transfer the gun to my son who is 18. I know that requires me to put a stock on it because you have to be 21. So, question is, I found a stock that folds over on top of the gun and not sure if that would be legal for him? Does it have to be a stock that is permanant?

I may be wrong but a pistol grip does not make it a pistol, it makes a shotgun with a pistol grip. Also you can give him a handgun...you just have to buy it first then transfer it to him.

Well, I was told at Turner's by the salesman that they cannot sell a pistol grip shotgun to any one under 21. If it has a stock and pistol grip its fine....

I would check on that, you know how gun store employees are.  CA has VERY specific rules about what is what and I think a shotgun is a shotgun and an 18 y/o can own it as long as it is the proper overall length.  However, one of our more learned members will be along to tell you.  Or you could check at calguns.com

Ok.... Spoke to CADOJ this morning and even they were confused by Turner's comments. So, you are correct a shotgun or rifle can be owned and purchased by someone 18yrs or older period. The overall length must be at least 26 inches. No need to do any paperwork per DOJ.... The person at DOJ said," When your son gets home hand him the shotgun and say it's yours now". I laughed and said thanks..

Yeah I inherited some rifles from my dad and I wanted to change ownership on the rifles. I went to Turner's and Bass Pro, both guys laughed and told me that the info/ reg. of the rilfes would have been out of the system or stored in a book. They said I didn't have to. I called DOJ and they told me the same.

Your son must be very happy. I'm thinking of getting a Moss 500 and putting a pistol grip and a vert grip with a short barrel for home protection.

Thanks for all the responses.. I will continue to post my questions here and call CADOJ to verify. My son is very happy that he gets the gun without any needed changes. Now he wants me to buy him a Glock and give that to him... UGHHH !!!!!!!!

The 'no pistol grip shotgun to under 21' is an ATF thing, not a CA thing.  They can sell the same shotgun with a stock to an 18yr old, but if the gun comes ONLY with a pistol grip, it's verbotten.

How all that applies to an intrafamilial transfer of a long gun - which isn't even required to be registered or reported in CA, to my knowledge - I have no idea. Dad can essentially go, 'here' and hand it to the son.
