I'm looking at renting a warehouse that has 12' ceilings. Yup kinda low. I went around my warehouse and realized that I really don't have much past 11'
But due to fire inspections and safety is there an issue with stacking 11' or hitting the 12' ceiling? My racks are 8' tall. The city is Stanton Ca. Thanks, Jim |

Too many variables (i.e. what you're storing, how its contained, etc.) to give you an accurate answer. Here's a link to the state fire code - start at chapter 23. Your local jurisdiction may have adopted more stringent amendments to the state code, so call them or check online. Hope this helps. FF |
| I think what you are asking is what kind of clearance you need from the ceiling, right? Each city or county(OC in your case) may have different codes.Does it have sprinklers? If I'm not mistaken my department says 36" from ceiling and 18" below the sprinkler heads. I'd have to double check though. During inspections, I explain to store owners that we we are trying to make their business safer so that if there is a fire we can save as much of their merchandise as possible. |

Once theirs a fire if the sprinkers go off there's NOTHING that can be re-sold. The building is with-out sprinklers. |
| Not all the sprinklers will go off at once(in a typical building) and the sooner the fire goes out or the faster the broken sprinkler head is fixed the more merchandise is saved. I understand if its wet or burnt it's trash, but if everything is to code then it makes our job easier and quicker. I'd say in your case 18" sounds fine, but you can call the local station and ask. I'm sure they would even come by and take a look at everything for you and make sure it's up to fire code. Good luck. |

Hey Jim, For non-sprinklered storage the code states 24 inches of clearance between storage and ceiling.
The potential risk may or may not lock you into that...I can help. I'm the inspector for your area. If you wish, IM or email me or call station 61 in Buena Park @ 714-527-9475 and ask for me. Good luck with your venture! Your friendly neighborhood Fire Marshal, Randy |

You bet Jim!
Sorry to hear about some of these costs. I would think you could prolly negotiate on some of these City costs...seeing how they are losing tax base like crazy. Most City's bldg depts. start regulating racks for storage when they reach approx. 5'9" in height. Give or take a few inches depending on local codes. Take care and the best to you and yours! |
