Hi All,

I just want to do a final check I understand everything correctly before I move to CA. By my understanding :

1. I simply bring my shotguns and bolt action rifles with me. No transportation requirements. No registration required.
2. My 1911 handgun has to be transported unloaded in a locked container. I register within 60 days and it is legal as it is under 10 rounds mag capacity (it's also on the roster).
3. My S&W M&P15 AR will come with me with all mags already permanently limited to 10 round capacity and a bullet button will be fitted. Any other modifications are irrelevant as long as barrel length and overall length are adhered to.

What I can't find is the requirements for transportation and registration of the AR. If it has a 10 round mag which can only be removed by way of a tool does that mean it is treated like a bolt action rifle, i.e. no registration requirements? Any specific transportation requirements? Any ammo transportation restrictions?

Many thanks

David

It is my understanding that as long as all of the weapons are unloaded and locked in the trunk or in a truck bed with a lockable cover and the ammo is transported in a separate area of the vehicle you are good to go.I always try to transport in a gun case of some sort with the action open or bolt removed . Then throw a moving blanket over them so they are not screaming LOOK AT ME HE HAS GUNS!! Make sure all your lights work and DO Not drive stupid. Also cover the ammo so if someone/cops walks by they can not see it and try breaking into you vehicle / cops start asking ? about if you got guns. The way I see it, is, this is YOUR PERSONAL STUFF nobody needs to know you have it!!! Do not advertise, and if they ask say you have nothing illegal. because you don`t rite?? and if they don`t ask don`t tell.
I am sorry to be so long winded but its the luck of the the draw. Sometimes you get a good cop that wants to help, sometimes you get an ass that just wants another notch on his nite stick. You just never know.
As long as the ar`s have the bullet button installed & the 10 Rnd. mag in the receiver its the same as the shot guns and rifles. Lock the pistol in its case with a trigger lock if you got one. Don`t put it in the glove box!!!

I reread your post and I believe that the bullet button has to be installed before you cross the state line to be legal, because thats what allows all the other evil features, as long as its not considered a short barreled rifle [barrel under 16"] you don`t have to reg. because it is just another rifle.

AR length is measured here with the stock fully collapsed.

Keep the old 30rd mags as is (or only modify half of them), keep the others dissasembled for SHTF (it will happen here first)

If the rifle is an AR by the list then it is illegal to import.  Bullet button will not save it.  (I believe the list is included in the tagged threads at the top.  If not, you can easily find it by go to the CA Attorney General website.)    Rather simple, if it is an AW on the list, can't be done.  If it isn't, and keep it that way by features, then it is just another rifle and nothing needs to be done.

Pistols need to be in a locked container.  Ammo can be in there with them, it just can't be loaded.  It also needs to be out of reach of the driver.  the laws are not as complicated as some guys have been told they are.

Calguns.net is a good site to check in with.

As far as pistols on the list, that is applicable to retail sales only.  If you own a pistol on the list you can bring it with you.  Just 10 round magazines.

Smith & Wesson ARs are not on the list.

The BB needs to be installed before entering the State or the firearm meets the legal requirements of an AW by its features.

All firearms must be transported unloaded, outside the reach of the driver, a lock of some kind is a good idea.

Two things to keep in mind.

1) AR15 is a Model name of a Colt rifle.  Most of those are AWs in California.

2) You don't own a AR15...you own a M&P15 made by Smith & Wesson.  Its a normal rifle, not an AW. (Make and model)

AWs are identified by make / model.

AWs are identified by features.

The stock firearm sold by S&W has features that meet the legal requirements of an AW in California.  Therefore it must be registered to be owned...and they dont allow you to register it. You can inform them you have an Unregistered AW if you want.  I was told that actually gets you out of some trouble, but sounds to me like you are out of the frying pan and into the fire...LOL.  Or you can do the only other thing and make sure it doesnt meet the requirements set into law, (the bullet button).  Then its a standard rifle, the same as any rifle and there is no registration for standard rifles.

As mentioned above, I have no intention of bringing it without the bullet button installed and with only 10 round mags.

I checked that the M&P is not on the list before buying (I almost bought a Colt 6920 which would have been a BIG mistake!!!).
