I would not live in Richmond, bad traffic, drugs , gang , high murder rate among gangs.
Look at living in Walnutcreek area .

Oh wonderful. Gangs, drugs and murder. The tri-fecta.

Will check out Walnutcreek. Any other areas to look at? Drive time is important (<1hr) but distance is not. Company vehicle

There are a lot of nice communities within easy commute range of Richmond.  At the salary you listed, you should be able to afford to live in a very nice area.  However, you could not PAY me to live in Richmond.  You could cross the Richmond/San Rafael bridge into Marin County and find all kinds of nice communities.

Welcome yet another gun owner to California!

Most people don't live in the same city that they work in, an hour or more is a pretty typical commute.

not so fast. not hardly a done deal. still lots to discuss and consider. just in the preliminary stages.

Walnut Creek is very nice. There are other great communities within an hour's drive, but that's certainly one of the more upscale ones.

Walnutcreek to Richmond down Hwy 4 is about a 30-45 min drive depending on where in Richmond u work.

Tell us where the jobsite is located in Richmond.  If it's Chevron, look at living in San Rafael.  If it's on the other side of Richmond, look at Alhambra Valley (Martinez?) or Reliez Valley (Pleasant Hill/Lafayette).

Guys, I get it. I wont consider living in Richmond, I promise
. The job is located near I-80 in El Sobrante (mailing addy is Richmond but looks to actually be in El Sobrante) so stuff on the east side would seem to be more convenient.

Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga would be very convenient.  You wouldn't even have to go through the Caldecott Tunnel.  San Pablo Dam Road runs from Richmond through El Sobrante, past the reservoir and into Orinda (very nice area).  Lafayette and Moraga are only another 10 minutes from Orinda.

Plenty of nice places to live if you can make 200k working in Richmond.  As listed above there is the entire 24/680 corridor Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda (aka Lamorinda) and Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Alamo.

As far as traffic goes, it is also very dependent on what time you start and get of work.  San Pablo Dam Road would probably work well getting to El Sob from the Lamorinda area

RICHMOND, Calif. —  Police were seeking a hooded gunman
who horrified the congregation of a San Francisco Bay area church when
he paced the aisles then pulled out a gun and shot two teenagers.

No arrests had been made or suspects named in the Sunday
shooting at New Gethsemane Church of God in Christ in Richmond, police
said.

The gunman flanked by two companions in hooded sweatshirts
walked into the church, scanned the pews and fired about five shots,
hitting a 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man in front of about 100
people, Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.

Charles Miller, a 64-year-old deacon at the church, said
members of the congregation were about to tell the men to take off their
hoods when the shooting began.

"I was listening to the choir and all of a sudden there was a
'pop pop pop pop pop,"' Miller told the San Francisco Chronicle.
"Everyone hit the floor. I didn't know the shooting was inside the
church at first, until I heard all of the hollering and screaming."

The 14-year-old was hit in the shoulder and the 19-year-old
was struck in the leg, French said. Both victims, whose names haven't
been released, were hospitalized and were expected to survive. There
were no other injuries.

"It's terrible when you come to the house of the Lord and
start doing this," Miller said. "It's just something you don't do."

Investigators believe the men were targeting someone in the
church but don't know if the two who were hit were the intended targets,
French said.

French said investigators were interviewing witnesses to see
if anyone recognized the men.

A handful of congregants returned to the church after police
processed the crime scene and finished the service.

"We went on and had church anyway," Miller told the Chronicle.
"We were giving thanks that nobody was killed. We wanted to go and
serve the Lord anyway."

The small, off-white two-story church is surrounded by a
red-and white wrought-iron fence in a residential section of Richmond, a
city of 103,000 on the eastern Bay shoreline north of Oakland and
Berkeley.

The city has already seen seven homicides in 2010, and
garnered national attention because of the alleged gang rape by as many
as 10 people of a 16-year-old girl outside an October homecoming dance
at Richmond High School, with as many as 20 bystanders allegedly
watching.

03PSD...

With $250K/yr income you can dart in and out of Richmond for work, and live nicely ~30min away (plus or minus some traffic).

I suspect where you might be working in Richmond will not be suffering as many 'urban ills' as would 'bad areas', public housing, etc.

Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette are all 'nice' areas.  Oakland hills living is beautiful, even if Oakland itself is dysfunctional.
San Ramon and Castro Valley are a tad further away and have their good points.

And you might be able to come into Richmond from the 'back end' (east) and live somewhere nice near 680 corridor - Alamo, etc.

Regards
Bill Wiese

I was born and raised in Richmond.. I am assuming you'll be employed by the Chevron Refinery?

be carefull and learn the city before you get lost in the many bad spots of town.... especially in the truck you described. It is easy to think hard-ass and that you'll not be fucked with... but I can assure you it is not a safe place.
If you are intelligent and dont start shit you should be good to go.

try to live to the north, or the west... not in Richmond... you'll want to live 30-40 min away.

Come on up to Vacaville.  It is about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive to Richmond.  Nice small town feel.  Two local indoor ranges, 30 minutes to a couple nice outdoor ranges.  Housing is a lot cheaper than the Bay Area.

Vacaville is located 1/2 way between San Fran and Sac on I-80.  Close enough for a night in either city or a day trip to the Sierra.

Only real detractor is the $4 per day bridge fare to cross over the Bay from Solano County to Contra Costa County.

I forgot about the El Cerrito and Kensington hill areas.  Close to El sobrante, good bay views, golf course, nice homes, but if you have kids, make sure their school is not the typical Richmond School District ebonic hell hole.  Everyone I know in those areas sends their kids to private school.

I would rather not at this point since I may not accept the job and some imminent changes there may not be public knowledge.
