I believe handguns must be unloaded and in a locked container. The truck is considered a locked container, the glove box compartment is not.

You can actually open carry in a car also.  Keep it in plain sight within reach, and you're good to go (but I can't remember if it has to be unloaded).

I don't want to hijack the OP's thread but I guess it's related... if he or I were to travel to CA with our weapons we would also have to bring 10rd mags (and not hicaps) right?

has to be unloaded, that's a Fish & Game Code violation even if it isn't a Penal Code violation

Correct, there is no provision in CA law that allows for the temporary importation of magazines that can hold >10 rounds.

You should also be careful about bringing semiautomatic, centerfire rifles that could be classified as "assault weapons".  Importation is allowed only in the following circumstances:

(m) Subdivisions (a), and (b), and (c) shall
not apply to the possession and importation of an assault weapon or a
.50 BMG rifle into this state by a nonresident if all of the following
conditions are met
:

(1) The person is attending or going
directly to or coming directly from an organized competitive match or
league competition that involves the use of an assault weapon or a .50
BMG rifle.

(2) The competition or match is conducted on the premises of one of the following:

(A) A target range that holds a regulatory or business license for the purpose of practicing shooting at that target range.

(B) A target range of a public or
private club or organization that is organized for the purpose of
practicing shooting at targets.
(3) The match or competition is
sponsored by, conducted under the auspices of, or approved by, a law
enforcement agency or a nationally or state recognized entity that
fosters proficiency in, or promotes education about, firearms.

(4) The assault weapon or .50 BMG rifle is transported in accordance with Section 12026.1 or 12026.2.

(5) The person is 18 years of age or
over and is not in a class of persons prohibited from possessing
firearms by virtue of Section 12021 or 12021.1 of this code or Section
8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code.

If you would like more specific info, please go to calguns.net and post specifics about your weapons you want to bring in and we can keep you on the right side of the law.

I agree with you....TRUNK.

Regarding the folks who are talking about "open carry" in your vehicle. I've lived in Kali for a lifetime, and have NEVER seen anyone do this, as they do in Arizona.

If you have your gun visible, on your seat, in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles County, or the hard left areas in Northern California, I will tell you that you had best be financially wealthy. Because the state will have the unlimited resources of the treasury behind them as they harass you.

I would also not doubt for one second, that if a cop driving by you, sees that gun, or a citizen sees it, and calls the cops, that the police will have multiple back up vehicles to pull you over.

Kalifornia has gone to the Pelosi Left. This is not Arizona.
Place a visible gun on the seat, in the areas I mentioned, at your own peril.

I guess this thread kind of answered a question I was going to ask here.  I'm coming back to the Bay Area for business and visiting friends and family.  As my god daughter loves to shoot I figured I would bring a 1911.  I would be driving.  Sounds like unloaded and locked in a container and I should be OK.  Thanks Paul for that thread link.  On a related note however, is there any requirement for that handgun safety certificate or whatever it is called if you are a non resident in the state temporarily?

You guys must really get sick of these questions...

No HSC required to shoot at a range, only to buy a gun.
