Hello everyone, I need your help…

I was recently offered a job in San Diego, California.  Always hearing of the strict gun laws in California, the first thing I did was look into weather or not I would be able to bring all my firearms with me.  I would hate to have to leave all my little bundles of joy behind.  I can’t say I was surprised to find out that 2 out of 3 are “illegal” or banned (at least per my interpretation).

So needless to say I have many questions, and that’s why I need your help…  I own an AR15, S&W MP9c, and 11-87.

My AR is a DPMS Pardus .223 (Semi-automatic).  The rifle is set up as a tactical varmiter with a 16” bull barrel, ARS sniper stock, CAA pistol grip, YMH full length quad rail, Harris ultra-light bipod and trigger job.   It’s my understanding that in order for an AR style rifle to be considered “legal” in the state of California it must have no more that 2 “Evil” features.  I think I have 3: semi-auto, pistol grip, and removable magazine.  However It may be 4 the ARS stock is not so much collapsible as it is adjustable.

-As a non resident, am I able to posses an AR type weapon in the state of California? And if so, am I able to modify it to met California requirements?

Also… I saw “DPMS panther (all)” listed on the California list of banned AR weapons.  Does that mean no matter what I do to my rifle, because it’s DPMS it will always be considered “illegal”?

For my pistol, I own a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 compact and love it.  However the magazines are capable of holding 12 rounds.  It’s my understanding that pistols are not permitted to have more than a 10 round capacity.

-Does that mean I can’t take it either?  What if I only load 10 rounds?

Any help you guys could provide would be great!  I really didn’t know who else I could turn to!  This is my first post so I’m just figuring all this out but when I get a picture of my rifle on here ill be sure to post it.  Thanks alot guys and take care!

You should post this in the California hometown forum.

I'm no expert... But only putting 10 rounds in a 12 round magazine isn't going to cut it...

They're concerned with possible capacity... not how many cartridges you actually put in.

For the rifles. California banned certain rifles by make and model. This is the lowers. That's why there is a market here for "off list lowers." If your exact lower is not on the list you are fine... Almost. We also can't have detachable mags, hence the "bullet buttons. A BB only takes about a minute to install and can be removed again when you move. And ten round mags. No standard capacity mags for us. Sounds like a lot but not really that big of a deal.

Handguns are also restricted to ten round mags. Don't bring your standard caps here that could be asking for trouble.

Cruise over to calguns.net to get all the particulars and to get "the list."

Thanks for the responses everyone its pretty clear my AR is illegal the way it sits now.  Ive looked at the Bullet Buttons and figure thats the easiest way to go.

However DPMS is listed under Appendix B of the AR chart posted, does that mean its illegal no matter what regardless of modification?

If the exact wording stamped into your lower contains "DPMS" and "Panther", then you're fooked. You'll need a stripped off list lower and transfer your DPMS parts to it.

Disassemble your 12 round pistol mags and keep them as repair parts. Get an OLL and replace the DPMS lower and run a bullet button + only 10 rounders or less. Then you are good to go. Also if you have any standard capacity AR mags disassemble them but keep them also for repair parts.
 Welcome to California.

OLL, BB, and 10 round mags... Looks like I gotta add a few more items to the list.

So now that ill have a stripped DPMS lower on my hands... Is it illegal to posses a stripped lower found on"the list"?

Thanks again to all who helped!

Sell the lower or give it to a friend, if it's on "the list" it is an AW.
