I get the feeling this has been asked before though I couldn't find anything on a search... sorry if this is redundant

Are there off list AR-10 lowers out there? Or maybe the better question is does the reasoning behind us having AR-15 OLLs apply to its big brother too?

If so what are some manufacturers that are Kali friendly?

Yes, there are a few out there.  I have a Fulton Arms "Titan" in .308 that I got from Cold War Shooters.  It uses DPMS parts.

If you didn't know, the AR10 and the like were not picked up by the military.  So there is no "mil spec" and the parts may not be interchangeable.

So don't count a Bushmaster part interchanging with a DPMS, or  with an Armailite and so on.

I'm having a custom upper made in 7mm-08, which is a .308 necked down to a 7mm.  Uses the same .308 magazine.

Kinda wish I'd just gone the .308 route from the start.

From what I've learned about the .223 platform, Winchester has a WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum) line that can be put on the .223 platform that can give you a big punch by just changing the upper.  Haven't heard any feed back about it tho.

Aha - thanks!

Outlaw - I didn't know that about the interchangeability of parts between receivers. Good info. Also is there a ready-made 10 round fixed magazine kit for a CA friendly AR10?

Thanks again.

44mags.com right here on the Equipment exchange has pretty good prices on mags and he'll have one for you.

If you put on a U15 stock or MonsterMan grip you don't have to have a fixed mag.

DPMS seems to be leading the AR10 preference these days.

Either a prince 50 or bullet button should fit work a mag lock as long as the threads of the mag catch are the same. Armalite had a course thread on the earlier mag chatched but changed it to the same as the AR15. I don't know about the DPMS catched though. If you had to you can have a DPMS mag button drilled and tapped for a set screw to make a fixed mag. like the price 50.

AR-10 only refers to Armalite.  Noveske or Aero are offlist AR-10 compatible receivers.

Have you tried shooting an AR-10 with a U15 stock?  Very uncomfortable unless you have very long fingers.

DPMS type offlist receivers are only ahead in PRK, mostly due to availability.

Hesse arms has some lowers floating around that fit Armalite uppers but I would rather throw bullets downrange by hand than buy a Hesse product. Usually require work to get them to function. For a while they were the only option to get a cali 308 AR but there are others now.

Of OLL rifles bulit around Armalite and DPMS lowers, is one considered very much better than the other? Are more parts available for one or the other?

Try the Fulton FAR-308 basically the same as DPMS just has a different name.

What I meant was: which lower is considered "the best" to build an OLL rifle around: armalite or DPMS? Or are both pretty good?

Lower does not matter as much as the rest of the rifle.

Armalite
has been in the AR .308 game much longer than DPMS, bugs have been pretty much worked out
more expensive than DPMS
chrome-lined or SS barrels
does not have forward assist (not that it is needed, in my opinion)
by my guess, there are more aftermarket goodies

DPMS
less expensive
does have forward assist
SS or chrome-moly barrels (unless they've come out with chrome-lined lately)

For discussions about them, look in the AR-10 and also Variants forum.

meh, I have had several of the hesse lowers and they work just fine, my current build shoots about .5moa

you just have to look at them as a 80% reciever, you are going to have to get a file out
