I'm going to be taking a pilot slot and attending AF OTS in August.  This question is purely hypothetical, as I have no reason specifically to think I'll wind up in CA, but I am curious.  I notice that AD military can get AW permits.  Is there anything analogous for regular magazines?  It would be kind of silly for them to allow full-featured AR15s but no mags, but "silly" probably does describe CA gun laws.

I think you AW permits will cover that. If not you can bring them in unassembled as unassembled is not a magazine, just dont assemble until you leave state but i dont believe that is a problem cause you are military. Best to call DOJ an d ask about AW permits for military and what it covers.

Dear xxxxxx,

Your request for information has been received and reviewed. Assuming
you registered your non-CA legal weapons with our Department under the
condition that they are just considered registered during the time you
are stationed in California for active military duty the large-capacity
magazines may accompany the firearms. If you have any further
questions
or concerns please feel free to contact the Firearms Division at (916)
263-4887.

Sincerely,
