I ought to get off my behind and apply for mine ... that $200 maximum fine just seems so much less than the time and money spent for the application. Sounds like a resolution for this year.

Well, I'm just waiting on a SIG 239 that I can put on my list of weapons I want approved, and plan to apply in Ventura County. I'm not that confident, but I'm going to try anyway. Anybody around here get one? not get one? and why they didn't? I'm afraid I won't have a "good enough" reason to get one. . ..

What are you waiting for?

I contributed to raising the number for O.C. last year, and I'm SO glad I finally went for it. I can't believe I waited so long to apply.

I'm not even going to try to get one. I think they'd laugh at me. I have no just cause. Stupid 'may issue' state...

Contra Costa County (population is over 1 million) is a joke when it comes to CCW's and Sherrif Rupf.  Unless youre helping him line his pockets, you aint going to get one from him.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case with certain agencies.  When Sherriff Gates was in office, there were approx 250-300 CCWs issued for Orange County.  Most of them were for retired judges, Advisory Council members, retired LE, campaign contributors, etc...  One of Mike Carona's planks when he ran for Sherriff in 99 was to remove the cronyism from the CCW process.  In two years since taking office, the number of CCWs issued by OCSD went from 300 to almost 900.

It's hard to believe the number for L.A. County is higher than for Orange County. I would have thought Orange County would be higher. Big difference between LASD Lee Baca and OC Sheriff Mike Carona.

In fact, I seem to recall a number for OC in the several thousands a few years ago. Has it gone down?

Where did you get these numbers?

For those who don't know, this is a good forum regarding CACCW:

As a percentage of the population, Orange county is higher.

Orange County has never had several thousands.  The increase came after Carona took office, but has been steady the past few years.

Here you go:

CCW issuance report to DOJ

[#20]
2003 breakdown of Orange County CCWs:

Level 3 reserves: 331
Judges: 103
General: 791

5-12 permits rescinded each year.

The General permit has remained steady throughout the years.  The number of level 3 reserves has really increased and Carona has come under fire for two high profile incidents the last year where level 3 reserves have pulled their CCW weapons and acted in a threatening manner.  Both were supposedly political appointments; one being his martial arts trainer and the other a campaign fundraiser and the owner of The Ritz in Newport Beach.

I moved back to Kali a little over two years ago and will be up for my renewal later this year. Is Sheriff Bonner’s approach equally rational for renewals?

In the past its been totally pro-forma administrative.  You go in with your original permit, pay your money, confirm your address, give a new thumb print and walked out of the office with a receipt that's supposed to cover you till your new permit shows up.  However, the new Capitan in charge of the program has been cracking down at least a little.  I've heard that guys who've had permits for years for reasons associated with their work, who have since retired have been having trouble getting renewed.  The Capitan has also been doing drive by's on permitties address so see if the cars parked there are registered to you, etc.  I also heard of him busting out one guy who lived elsewhere and was using his brothers address.  Apparently the Capt. called and the child that answered the phone gave up that "Uncle Permittee" lived in Sacramento or something like that.

Now, when you go in you have to fill out a one page form that basically goes over the "need" info from the original form; so you might want to review the conditions that you originally applied under.  Seems like if you're still in the same boat need wise, you haven't been a bad boy, and you were legit residence wise in the first place you're good to go.  One suggestion.  Make a copy of your permit before you go in.  They'll take your old permit and leave you with nothing but the receipt for your new fee while they process.   I'd hate to have to present my receipt to an officer instead of a real permit if need arose...better a copy of the expired permit and a receipt for the new one.  Also, if you wanted to use your permit as evidence of competency for a DROS you'll be better off with a copy then a reciept.
