the way i understand it i can open carry when hiking on federal land, but not on state land correct?

Some federal land, can't remeber about state. But definantly not National Parks, rangers have no sense of humopr about guns in the park.

You can open carry in National Forests, but not in National Parks.

You also can conceal carry at your campground without permit where not prohibitted.

do it all the time while stream fishing in the forest areas if isolated never a problem.Have even talked to the local sheriff out there actually he came by me to see how i was doing and had .45 in belt holster never asked about it.Guy was very cool too told me about other good fishing spots and good places to shoot at

And I've bumped into the BLM rangers a dozen times and all but one were eventless. Once I was accidently shooting in an area that had been closed to shooting (no signs and un-announced). There were two of us and one of him. He approached from behind and asked us to set our pistols down. Pretty minor event, most cops are people.
