Say I get pulled over and I have my CA Legal AK-47 in the truck (with DOJ papers), or any gun for that matter, in a locked case not loaded. Should I tell the cop right away that I have that in my truck? Or should I want until he asks “do you have any weapons?” (if he asks that). I am pretty sure it is legal for me to drive around with the AK in my truck in a locked case with no ammo near it but I heard cops can give you trouble for that – I live in LA by the way. I just wanna stay out of trouble. Thanks, Tony |

Close but no cigar. You can carry it (the AK-47, any other registered AW, or pistol) unloaded and locked, but only to and from a place where it is legal to shoot it. Not just have it in your truck on a random trip. Other guns may be carried unloaded in your trunk - pistols locked in a container.long guns need not be locked. And in CA, an LEO can ask to see if any guns are loaded, and you must let him see them. |
Okay, first off I'll start with you should try to avoid getting pulled over when transporting firearms. drive like you have a kilo of cocaine a dead hooker and Sadams missing WMDs in the car. But for the purposes of discussion we will ignore that advise and assume you get pulled over.
No, you should not.
You should answer "I do not have anything illegal in my vehicle." |
If it's an OLL it's considered just a rifle and you don't have to lock it up. Carry your OLL papers with the rifle and use AR15fan's statement. |

I had this recently happen, although I did not actually have any firearms in the car. When I opened my wallet to give the cop my DL my CA safety cert crap fell out and a business card for my gun dealer that has an obvious big gun on it. so the cop says "you have a gun with you" me: not at the moment cop: ok that was it. If I actually did not sure what I would do. |
