Hey there fellas,

Where would a guy go, within 40 minutes of "the valley (LA)," to shoot Speed Steel?  I shot a match up here in Oregon last weekend that was too much fun, and I want to get a pal of mine to go check some out.

Any help?

Cheers

The only place I can think of that fits your parameters is A Place to Shoot gun range.

I'm not sure if this is the same as your "Speed Steel" is but there is a steel match (called Steel Madness) every odd Sunday at the Rauhaagues range down in Norco.  Check out:  SSA Shooters

Basically it's an IPSC/USPSA type of match where there are a bunch of steel plates and poppers that you knock down.  It's a lot of fun.

Oh, and it's about an hour for me from the West Valley.

Thanks for the responses guys.

A Place to Shoot looks good.

I believe Speed Steel is the same all over.  Here is a place I found near Lake Piru that does it and they use the same diagrams I saw at the range here ("Showdown", "Outer limits," etc).
World Speed Steel Championships
Their map shows it's near Magic Mountain.  I've never been there, but always heard Piru was the boonies.  Any of you know that area?

Cheers

Ahh, you're talking about Steel Challenge.

Yep, Piru is the place you want to go for that.  They're the ones that started it and where they hold the actual championship event.  You basically go north a little past Magic Mountain then go west on the 126 for a while till you get to Piru.  I think it took me about 45 minutes to get up there from off the 101.  It looks like they shoot steel challenge on the first saturday of the month:  Piru match schedule  I used to shoot USPSA there but they stopped shooting that there more than a year ago.  I've been thinking about shooting the big Steel Challenge event this year.  I'll have to go check it out one of these days.

The other local place that I think shoots Steel Challenge is West End Gun Club in Lytle Creek (of the 15 freeway).  Check them out at www.wegc.org

Yes. Go West on hwy. 126 about 10 miles, follow the signs to Lake Piru and about a mile before the dam there is a sign on the right hand side of the road next to a cattle gate. Follow the dirt road back into the canyon. The steel challenge range is the last one in the canyon, about four or five miles into the canyon on the left hand side The International Shooters Institute (ISI) is the club that manages the IDPA and Steel Challenge ranges.
The World Speed Steel Championships is growing into one of the largest competitions in the world. If I'm not mistaken, it passed the Bianchi Cup last year as far as number of contestants and $ amount of prizes awarded. The final day of compitition is pretty damn impressive with all the best shooters in the world having a shoot-off. It is truely amazing how fast some of these folks are. Other cool aspects of the annual contest are the other formats of competition that lead up to the final day. Last year, for the first time, we had a Ruger 10/22 competition, shot for time on steel targets. We also have a shotgun competition using Vang-Comp supplied and prepped 870's on pepper poppers that is a gas. I've RO'd tht event since its inception in 2002.
Good luck and hope to see you out there.
