deej86: So. Calif(Los Angeles metropolitan area) is pretty much surronded by mountains. The "Grapevine" is the highly traveled steep main connecting road through Santa Susana Mountains of Southern Calif(L.A. County) and  Northern Calif(Kern County). At the summit, it oftens snows here in the winter and the CHP often closes Tejon Pass until the inclement conditions has passed, its because most Kali-fornians are not used to treacherous driving . Trucks often must use low gear while descending because of the long downgrades, and they have a few runaway truck ramps "just in case."

There is also a similar route on I-15 from L.A. to Las Vegas called Cajon Pass in the San Bernardino Mtns.

I think while I am asking questions about PRK, I will ask this one?  What "color" state is it? (red or blue)

purple - More Red Counties by far than Blue, But more Blue people than Red.

You think the Grapevine is bad now, you ought to see the pics off what it looked like to get the name.  The Ridge Route wasn't much better.

It's  I-5 dropping from the Lebec Valley in the Tehachapi Mts down to the Central Valley. It's about a 800 foot difference in elevation in 3 miles from Wheeler Ridge to the base of the Grapevine and then another 3000 ft in about 5 miles to the top.

Not any more surprising than SoCal residents considering anything past Barstow "back East."

Isn't the old saying "I heard it through the grapevine" in regards to CA's grapevine HWY?

"Heard it through the grapevine," as far as I know, means, I heard something from someone else,  before I heard it from you.  Usually about something bad.

I think you're right on the intended meaning but did it originate from California's Grapevine?

Grapevine isn't bad if you luck out and don't get stuck behind some asshole who is determined to sit in the fast lane going 60mph up the entire goddamn length of the grade while he's in a dead heat with another car in the number 2 lane.

Having a vehicle that can actually get out of it's own way and drive the grapevine at 70+mph is nice, now if everyone else would actively participate in the task at hand which is driving and realize that they need to get the fuck out of the way on the grade and let faster traffic pass.

AND DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE DAMN TRACTOR TRAILER RIGS WHO TRY TO PASS ON THE GRADE, I REALLY GET FIRED UP WHEN EVERYONE IS DUMBED DOWN TO 45MPH WHEN PULLING UP THAT MO-FER!

The grapevine isn't that bad, it's the rest of the assholes on the road that piss me off.     Everyone kinda tows the line when driving up the hill but I have seen more stupid shit across the top above Gorman and dropping down into Semi-valley that really gets me worried.     The people who refuse to wait to pass on the left but instead will hop 2-3 lanes on the right flying by with a 10-15mph difference in speed, just waiting to see one of them get absolutey creamed when they go into the trucking lane to pass vehicles that are in the no 1 and no 2 lanes while they pass a big rig on it's right hand side at 80+mph.

It isn't??

Trying to get a definition of Central California and Northern California is one of the things that keeps real Californians awake on snowy nights.  But since most of us real Californians don't live where it snows we don't worry about it  Central Coast is usually between Point Concepcion and the SFO Bay, but inland is anybody's guess.

I've got news for you my friend... most of my fellow Californians can't drive worth a sh*t, bad weather or not!  I put approx. 50k per yr. driving all over the state from San Diego to Chico, and let me tell you, drivers get worse the farther North you go.  With the exception of the 280, most highways in the bay Area are pure hell at commute time...I've seen more jackass maneuvers on Bay Area highways than anywhere else in my travels.

.......Putting on Fire Suit.....

If my fellow Californians need to Flame me over my comments, go right ahead, it won't be the first time...
