I've never been shooting on BLM but would like to go, but first I have a few questions. I checked out the BLM site and a few places allow hunting. Does hunting also imply target shooting or are they two different things? If anyone has any tips on BLM shooting, I'd appreciate it! I'm in the SGV btw.

Target shooting and hunting on BLM land are two different things, just make sure you don't kill any animals while out plinking.

Thanks for the clarification. I looked at this site I found just now:

http://www.ca.blm.gov/caso/hunting.html

And it seems that there isn't anywhere near LA County that allows recreational shooting? Or am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks for the help, ranges are getting boring (and expensive)

Be careful around Palmdale, IIRC not much BLM land, and if it isn't BLM you could be trespassing.  You probably need to go to Kern County before you find BLM land.  Now out to the Barstow area it opens up almost wide open. Check the Barstow BLM site for more details.  IF and I said IF I recall correctly everythinhg north of I-40 and CA-58 on public land is open to anything legal, south of 58 and 40 it depends where you are what is legal..

yeah be careful of palmdale. theyre developing like crazy so all of our old shooting spots are beginning to dissappear. ive already had sherriff kick me and my friends out a few times, and i have sat in the back of a cruiser having all of my weapons checked because i wanted to save an hour of driving by shooting nearby my house. now we just shoot on our own property....just have to drive far to do it

The area in Rosamond is in Kern if I remember correctly, there's also a place a few miles north off of Backus Rd. You can also stay on the 14 north and go past Mojave up by Jawbone Cyn.
