Juvenile coachwhip.
http://thies-times.com/serpentryan/lifelist/Snakes/EasternCoachwhip.html OP's snake: The coloration, but more importantly the scales on the tail give it away as a coachwhip. Note the coachwhip tail.

I've seen lots of racers in the 18" range and they all were predominantly black. I wasn't going to dispute the other posters about it, but have never seen a racer with those markings personally. The only coachwhips I've seen were in the 5-6' range, but the tail is a dead giveaway. Good call. |

This old born and raised South Florida Cracker can say from experience that the adult Coachwhip snake is the meanest non poison snake in North America. It makes the adult Black Racer seem tame and docile. This 5th gen Floridian will second that motion - all in favor say "I" LOL Red Funny how all snakes will make us jump when you see them - believe that it is in or nature from cave man days. |

Man - courtesy of our hogs, I haven't seen a rattle snake on our ranch since the 80's. I've become a little desensitized. A good strike will get my mind right again! |

It's a funny reaction.
I spend my days crashing through the brush for work (surveying). Palmettos, swamps, briars, you name it. While usually armed with a machete, it's often faster to just push through, and/or follow game trails when they go the way I want to. I can spend days or weeks crashing through without much thought, but that ONE TIME when I stumble on a moccasin or rattler will absolutely WRECK me for the rest of the day! I'll be tip-toeing my way through, jumping at every vine or stick I see.

There was a pygmy rattler in my garage a couple of weeks ago hiding behind my trash bin right by the garage door. When I pushed the door opener button my wife who was getting into the car called me over just in time to see him slither out the corner of the rising door and into the darkness and the bushes where he hid and buzzed like mad. It all happened too fast to get a picture of him. |
