How bad is the hurricane ? How often do these things come along Atb Not very frequently in South Florida area and ones that does hit are usually not very strong. I've been living in South Florida (near Miami) since 1970 and I can only remember getting hit by 4 or 5 hurricanes where we suffered any damage. The worst was Andrew in 1992 when South Miami/Homestead area was devastated. For 3-4 hours it sounded like we were in a tunnel while a train was going through it at 90 mph. In Miami we lost electricity for 14 days and no water for 11 days. It took 3 days of tree cutting/clearing by all the families in the area to clear the road to get out of the neighborhood. David in early 80's caused some damage including a palm tree that fell down on one of our car and Wilma did some damage to our screened patio and fell couple palm trees. The part of hurricane with real strong wind is pretty small (30-40 miles wide) and rest of the hurricane area is lower strength wind so it doesn't cause too much damage if your prepare for it. You have to be hit pretty directly to be bad or if you live near the beach where you can get ocean surge of 2-6 feet high. If you are prepared for it you can be ready in just 2 or 3 hours. I prepare in April or early May by stocking up on water/food, gas, etc. each year so when Matthew came this way we prepared our house (complete shutter for house, steel brackets for garage door and all car fueled and positioned) in about 3 hours. |

| Andrew was the worst I can remember for South Florida. I had to drive a truck for a company I worked for down into Miami and nothing looked familiar afterwards. All road signs and buildings I used as way points were gone. Thank God Mathew passed by for the most part. The poor people down in the islands didn't fair so well. |

Think of hurricanes in the South like blizzards up North.
You get a few each year. Some will shutdown everything and some end up being an inconvenience. Both can be deadly. The one difference is blizzards don't blow your house away and you can't purchase blizzard insurance. |
