Some of you may or may not remember me. I'm a FL resident by birth and lived in FL all my life until I joined the Army. I'm starting to hit the point where I'm going to need to begin looking for work before I get out. I'm set to ETS 22APR2016 which isn't that far away if you take into account I'm going to be deployed for a long while and will have a few months when I get back to get ready to enter back into the civilian world.

I really want to come back to FL. How is the job market?

I'm an intelligence analyst with experience in both Africa and Middle East AO's. I'll have been doing this for 4 years when I get out. What do my job prospects look like right now? Considering what is going on I think they look pretty good. Should I look elsewhere? I'm single and don't have kids so I can go just about anywhere but I would prefer to stay in FL if I could.

Depends on where in FL your looking.   It varies.  The Fl overall unemployment rate is at 6%. Some counties are under that some are way above that.

Realistically I'd want to stay central or northern FL.

Do you plan on staying with a DoD type job? If so Central Florida and Space Coast is a decent place to be. I spent 5 years at UCF getting a education degree and had some friends that had internships/jobs with DoD/NASA contractors. Im in Sarasota doing commercial construction and its pretty busy (save for typical end of the year taper), the residential contractors are busy too. There is a shortage of quality tradesman right now for sure. Seems most people that want jobs have them. Central Florida traffic blows though, glad I'm out of there.

Ever consider sending your resume or information to the bigger hedge funds and investment firms?  I bet they are always looking for people who know their way around those parts of the world, speak the language maybe even personally know government officials of those countries / locations.

Yes that is the plan. Or contracting.

Don't forget to look at MacDill as well for GS jobs at CENTCOM, sounds like you would be a good fit.

I work at an investment bank in Jacksonville. See my email and reply below:

from me:
Good Afternoon,

I have someone in mind who will have four years' experience as an intelligence analyst, specifically in Africa and the Middle East. Do we have spots for this kind of skillset here? Emerging markets / research / political investment risks, etc.; or in general?

His expected discharge from service is scheduled for April 2016.

from hiring managers:
Absolutely, xxxx has already planned a future map for veterans and accounted for such type of talent.

Can be either for generalist positions or even analytical type roles in future

Once we see his / her resume, we will match for best fit. Thanks

The firm I work at is hiring and will continue to do so at that time. The key to my employer is getting in the door. Moving to perfect position is done over time.

I would be happy to help you. However, I do reserve the right to stop helping you at any time, as it would be my name on the line as well. PM would be the way to go.

I would also help other arfcommers interested in finance in the Jax area. Same rules apply.

I'll send you a pm at work. As of right now I'm looking but things will solidify more after I'm done with this deployment. I honestly don't know how my skill sets will transition so I'd like to know what the job position does to be sure I'm a good fit. Additionally what does starting pay and benefits look like? These are important as they will determine where I live ECT. I'm looking to improve my standard of living from what it is right now.

In general your timeline is too long to determine a position right now. Specifically where I work, when a position becomes open, it is filled asap; ~3 months would be on the longer side. I asked them to show you whether they have an interest is your skills in general, and / or if they are friendly to vets.

You are right in not knowing how your skills will transition. Only your potential employers will be able to answer that question in the form of an offer to do xzy, and the $$$ to do said job. Open up as many opportunities for yourself as possible by interviewing at multiple companies. Try to do it all at the same time so as to have offers come in all at once, and choose the best for your happiness.
