When FOX let the "European model" out of the bag early on, I only paid partial attention to the weather reports (as in what's the temperature gonna be).  The news likes to focus on the cone of doom only for the ratings.

I'm  in Riverview, SE of tampa, about 7 miles from the bay and I think about 30 miles from the gulf. So far I have just trimmed the trees in the yard and picked up all the small items laying around. I am always GTG on food and water and other things.
It has been fun going to the stores this weekend and watching some of the panic. The sheep are out in panic mode.
Unless this thing makes a hard right turn I have no plan to board up the windows and doors. I will keep an eye out on Sunday.

Im in the panhandle.  Panic buying galore here.  Saw a lady in walmart with 1 complete cart full of water and the second cart was full of cupcakes, chips, duct tape, and all manner of worthless stuff.  It seems like some of these folks just buy stuff to be doing something.  no propane around as of this afternoon though gas seems to be available.  If this goes to cat 2 or 3 with 24 hrs to go, it is going to get stupid here.  We have a lot of people getting H Opal and H Ivan flashbacks.
I have hurricane shutters.  They go up for the first panhandle storm and stay up till the end of the season.  (except for egress windows of course, i take them off immediately)

I am in Naples and the same crap is going on here.  Emptied 1 of 4 propane tanks last night for steak and made the error of going to our grill n fill.  Randall was just paying off his son's college fund  He chuckled as to why I was there (he's a shooter too) and told him I just didn't think before tossing it in the trunk for my saturday errands.  Walmart looked to be a zoo, lowes and HD had lines out the entrance, but total wine was quiet....my prep is completed.

Just about done with the preps.

Wife and I went to Walmart for some random supplies, then I picked up a generator and transfer panel from Lowe's.

Now I can run my well pump, fans and lights in most rooms, fridge and deep freezer.

I live about half a mile from the beach on the panhandle.  It looks like I will be right at the impact when the winds will be still over 100 mph.  The crappy thing is I am in the military and we are working 12 hour shifts so I am not getting any time to get my house ready.  I guess I will be boarding up windows and getting stuff ready tonight using my truck's headlights.  We will evac if it gets to be a cat 2.

5500 and 8250 peak. Briggs & Stratton engine.

It runs my well pump, freezer, fridge and fans and lights in both bedrooms.

That's really what I wanted out of it.

What's the story on feeding these things through the dryer plug?

IIRC you turn off all the breakers except the rooms you want to use. We did it after Andrew so I don't remember too well but I do remember it wasn't that hard.

If your dryer breaker is located in a garage panel turn off all breakers on your exterior power feed panel.  Then turn off all interior breakers except for the dryer and whatever rooms you would like to power.  If your dryer breaker is located in the exterior feed panel turn off all exterior breakers except the dryer, then turn off all interior panel breakers except for the rooms or sections you would like to power.  No matter what the breaker labeled main must be off to avoid sending current down the street FROM your house.

ETA: If you power thru a dryer plug, the prongs are hot!  Don't touch them lick them or jack ass around our you will die!

hive please feel free to chime in if I made an error on this.

The dryer plug seems like a bad idea all around.

Forgetting to disconnect the main breaker seems easy and dangerous.

Reversing through a breaker isn't ideal either I think, most DC breakers I work with have a clear "Line" and "Load" side.

I think I'm happy with the box I installed.

This.  Or a manual xfer switch.  Seen too many handyman dryer outlet backfeeds go wrong.  Breakers fail.

A transfer switch is absolutely the best way to go without a doubt.  But if it isn't available, we should be able coach a fella on how to not kill himself or others.  I don't have a transfer switch but am confident in what I do.  Hell a power company linesman owned the home before me and not only walked me through it but left laminated directions for the fuse panels.

When in doubt, remove one screw and pull the breaker.  Better yet as a safety pull the main power breaker before backfeeding.

Plenty of diesel at all the stations though. That's why I have a diesel truck and diesel genny. Also neighbors can't borrow my "gas" cause it won't work in their genny's

Any time I have someone that wants a new panel or service installed it is strongly suggested to have a main breaker on the panel also.  It may be a little more $, but with the service disconnect and main breaker in the panel, it lessens the kaboom factor when someone comes in after to jerry rig a generator feed.

Today I checked all the breakers. And I have a breaker that does nothing I can find  All the lights, outlets (inside?Outside), fans, and appli work. Soo

I left it off in hopes I find out what it powers.

I made an excel sheet that lists the breakers and what they power, I will have it laminated and stuck to the panel..

They are Credit Card sized AKA wallet sized.

I used to work a news paper and used the nifty new $25K copier.

I just reduced then in full color. It did take a few times to get the front and back to line up.
