I went buggin' with my buddy in Biscayne Bay this past weekend and on one of my spots low and behold a Lionfish.
This is the first time I have seen one and I have been diving and fishing in Florida all of my life (34yrs). I have heard many reports and know they started a tournament in Key Largo for them this past year. They are pretty stupid and just sit there and stare at you. I stabbed/bludgeoned him with my lobster stick and left him for the crabs. I should have feed him to the short gag grouper staring at me but didn't think about it until after I had already crushed him. Water was 73 degrees and I forgot my wetsuit. Total tally for the day was 12 bugs, a 29inch Gag (Pole spear is no longer a virgin), and 4 Cuba Libres at Scotty's. Made blackened grouper over buttered rice for dinner. Will definitely take pictures next time and post them up. |
