Forrest Road 88. They have renumbered a lot of the roads now but go east on Highway 40. Turn left (north) at the fire tower and it is on the right. Be careful when you go there. I would not go alone. Dan I haven't been there in about 15 years but I don't remember any criminal type elements. Something changed? Yes you can run into some carnie types out there but the place is actually 1,000 times better than it was in the 70's and even 80's. Maybe I'm just used to it. |

Criminally stupid might be a better description...poor weapons handling and saftey failiures are common out there...watch your six.. |

The range is just off SR 40, a few miles east of the Ocklawaha River bridge. You know you are at the right place when you see the old tower on the South side of the road. Turn left, (North) on Forest Road 11 (Used to be FR 88) Range is about half a mile on your right. Despite the fear mongering, it is a safe place to shoot. They have re done a lot of the facility. I enjoy shooting there, and make that a part of my regular trips down to the ONF. In literally hundreds of visits, I have never had a problem. http://www.myhostedpics.com/images/Mannlicher/calarange.jpg I agree, it's a good place to shoot... generally. I have had to ask people to be careful on a few occasions. One time this guy had about 5 people from China out there with him. He was allowing them to shoot an SAR-1 from the hip as fast as they could pull the trigger. Well of course their rounds were going into the dirt several feet to the front, hitting targets well down range that were not theirs, and hitting the concrete walk way, etc. When I confronted him about it he was very polite and understood, but due to a lack of "range time", he simply did not realize his behavior was not only dangerous but very rude. Once I had to actually "flash my badge" to keep two guys from placing a TV and other garbage items out on the range to shoot to pieces. When I saw what they were doing, I politely asked them not to and cited the reasons and rules for not doing so. When they gave me the old "mind your own business cold shoulder", I had top get "official" and insist they not continue with their current course of action. I have had to whisper in many folks ears about stepping off the line with their weapon, only to sit down on the bench behind all the other shooters, to reload. Of course their weapon is now pointed in every direction including at the asses of folks on the firing line. Besides the unsafe gun handling, which you will have at just about every range, what gets me is the trash folks leave behind. That along with the bullet holes in the signs and bathrooms. THAT IS WHY I STICK MY NOSE IN PEOPLES BUSINESS WHEN THEY START DOING DUMB SHIT. With cut backs in money concerning the state, it's a wonder they still maintain the range and provide it to us free of charge. I feel it is EVERYONES business to take care of it. Best time to go is dawn and/or dusk. |

I don't know the address but here's a google map route from Ocala. CLICKY ME! The only distasteful experience I've had there is the old geezers stealing brass, and once one of them admonished me for sliding my mosin down the bench a foot or two by the buttstock while on cold range so another guy could set his stuff down. The mosin was unloaded and the bolt was open. |

I agree with "watching your back".
I was there last weekend for fathers day shooting with my buddy and his dad. We had to police the range it seemd, as going "range cold" just meant for the guys to stop firing, as half the line was still pointing rifles down range and fiddling with their gun, or loading ammo, or one guys kid actually still sighting down the frife as people walked out to place targets, and the dad didn't say anything or care. I saw quoite a few displays of idiocy, it's sad, as me and my buddy were probably the youngest there besides a few 10 year olds and we had to be the "adults". Plus, people don't like being told what to do, and that just makes matters worse when guns are involved. |
