Hey I was going to go camping/hiking soon with a few friends and I believe I read the law correctly that I can open carry (I am 18) a handgun as long as I am 'lawfully' camping.  Any insight on this? Just want to make sure before I go.

Technically you may be in the right, but unless you are on private property, I would plan on camping indoors.  As in a cell.  Even in the northern section of florida, LE are gonna insist that you are breaking the law (although 790/791 says open carry is fine while camping).  The fact that you are 18 is gonna make them even more certain that you aren't legal.  I've had BSO academy instructors argue that an 18 year-old can't even hold or fire a handgun at a range.  Even after pointing out the stautes regarding possession they would still argue the point.  Not trying to bust on you, just stating what my experiences have been (I lived in FL from 89 to 2006),  You might get cut free with no charges but the hassle and the ride aren't gonna be worth it.

fuck the ones that cant read the law. its legal you can and should. if some ged educated cop wants to give you a hard time carry the FL law in your pocket. when they get all ass hurt that you know wtf your talking about maybe they will learn to read past the 4th grade level.

still doesn't mean you wouldn't be put in cuffs.......

oh and to add, be respectful. doesn't help you to tell them what I wrote with a angry attitude.

Some might suggest that you print every applicable statute from the latest version of the law and keep it with you and handy in case you have any issues.  Then you can politely be sure that the LEO is as best informed as possible.

I was  hiking into Impassable Bay yesterday (Osceola NF).  I openly carried my S&W 25-5 /45 Colt in a cross draw full flap holster.

The only thing I saw was birds, snakes, deer and a turtle .

I've seen hunters that were open carrying stopping for stuff in a 7-11 before but I've never done it myself. Has anyone here ever done it and encountered LEO or rangers?

As I understand it - stopping at a store, gas station, etc.. is NOT covered by the statue.

Depends on your definition of going to or from

It sure does, but be sure to bring a heavy caliber. I hunted a gator last season, got really lucky in the draw, and it took 8 .357 mag's to the skull before he stopped fighting back. And keep in mind that that was from a bang stick so the bullet was on his head. He was 12.5 feet and 600 pounds.

Absolutely correct.  Thank you for correcting that.
And we need some case law.

Right now I have a Glock 27 .40.  I also plan on getting a .45 1911 soon so I'm sure that does better against gators.   I knew that gators were hard to stop.  I have been told that it takes more than one shot in a lot of cases.

FYI...shooting a gator is going to get you in a lot more trouble that just open carrying.  Even if you think one is going to chomp on your food, if you shoot it, you will probably go to jail.  You better have bite marks. Its a third degree felony AND they will keep your gun.

372.663  Illegal killing, possessing, or capturing of alligators or other crocodilia or eggs; confiscation of equipment.––

If an alligator or any animal that poses a threat to my life or a fellow human's life starts charging at us I WILL shoot it.  But thanks for the warning.

This is what I do. I've carried a handgun of some sort in my car since I turned 18 and always had the statute in the case under the foam in case they decided to be be a douchebag because they were under or misinformed. My legal instructor (assistant states attorney for Hernando county) at the academy was awesome on the subject of guns in cars; a quote: "If you pull over someone with a weapon, LEAVE THEM ALONE! Unless they're felons, have an outstanding warrant or you just saw them do a drive-by, let them go. The people who are going to shoot you on the side of the road aren't going to wait for you to FIND the gun before they use it."

I thought it was pretty good advice, he's obviously pro-gun.

This for sure. I had a legit state license and there was a ton of paperwork I had to tell the state every person that got part of the meat or hide.

Yeah but I'm not going out to hunt gator, I know it's illegal without all the paperwork and with a gun.  I was just asking for protection purposes.  I'm not going out looking for gators, but I have had them catch me off guard before.

I have heard that one shot to the head from a 30.06 at 100 ft will send a really big gator straight to the bottom.
