Hopefully you guys are joking.  How is this "grandstanding" or "overkill"?  The article says the guys is armed with several rifles.  How do you propose they deal with this situation?   And why wouldn't they need an armored vehicle?  Almost every medium to large agency in the country has one.  Last time I checked Crown Vics weren't bulletproof.  How do you expect them to safely approach the house, or evacuate any civilians?  I'm sure they could have dropped 300k on a new Lenco, but instead they got a piece of surplus military equipment that was either free or purchased through a grant for next to nothing.  Please remove your tinfoil hats and use some common sense.

Thats just some surplus stuff.  If they wanted to spend your tax $$$$$$$$ they would get a striker

Is it illegal to have an armored vehicle? Come to think of it, I don't see a lot of armored bank trucks on the used car lots........

I believe it is legal to have.  I think I have even seen armored bank trucks for sale.  I could be incorrect though

My understanding is that Clinton put a stop to anymore surplus armored vehicles from being sold to the public. That only leaves buying those that remain in civilian hands already, and imported ones like com-bloc stuff.

The reason I said it was overkill is because there was no report he threatened anyone

but himself. I think seeing an APC and these combatants could have a tendency to

escalate the situation. If he had threatened others then I have no problem with it.

I based my statement on the story. I'm glad he did not kill himself and that it ended

peacefully.

If he was willing to do his-self in then who knows if he would have a problem taking a few cops with him.

Armored vehicle is there to provide cover and safe transport.  Maybe it's not needed, but it's better to have and not need than vise versa.

What qualifies you to decide what is necessary and what isn't?  How long have you been or how long were you a LEO?  How long were you on SWAT?

I understand what your saying.  Situations like this are difficult, and they can be unpredicable.  Even though the guy hadn't threatened anyone that we know of, the LEO's are still tasked with protecting the public from him, and then protecting him from himself.  It can be a dangerous job, and they shouldn't have to do it without adequate protection just because of how it might be perceived.  And sometimes a show of force can just as easily defuse a situation as it can escalate it.  I'm quite sure that their response was about the same as it would have been if this had happened anywhere else in the US.  Just my .02.  Glad it all worked out.

The Posse Comitatus Act

I am not saying that the officers didn't have a good reason to use an armored vehicle... but the police being almost indistinguishable from the military makes me uncomfortable. Somehow many police departments over the years have dealt with similar situations without resorting to armored vehicles and a dozen guys in full military battle gear. I hate to use the "slippery slope" argument, but this seems appropriate here. When we ignore history we are doomed to repeat it...

Did you ever watch Andy Griffith? Did it make you uncomfortable?

My department USED to have an armored vehicle.....until the City was sued by the NAACP because it was too "aggressive", and aimed at intimidating the minority community.  Never mind that it was parked at HQ, 12 miles from the "community" in question.

Yes, it WAS deployed during one particularly hot summer.....in response to RIOTS that were occurring virtually every weekend, and was used to extricate officers that were ambushed in a swell place called "The Plaza".  These fine "yoofs" were stopping and dragging people out of their cars, etc.

Until you've driven into one of these ambushes where every window but one in your patrol car is broken out by bricks, your light bar is knocked completely off the roof and you get to spend two days in the hospital because you took a bottle in the side of your head, don't tell me that "freaking cops" don't need every tool at their disposal.

BTW, most LE agencies in Florida get their armored vehicles, helicopters and other high-ticket equipment through the Military's DRMO Program in Tallahassee.  $500 Bucks for an armored vehicle, $1,000 bucks for a helicopter, etc.  Usually they'll buy 2 or 3, then scavenge parts off them to make one "good" one, and have lots of spare parts.
