Hey guys,
Well i will be moving out of florida for a new job soon. But it is a weird situation so i figured i would ask your suggestions. In a nut shell, i leave for job training, finish the training, then have a bout a week (i hope) after the training before my first day of work. I live in a small house in FL under 1500 sq ft, but im a single guy, so i have no wife or kids to help me move, or be up there to meet me in an apartment after training. I dont have the time now before i leave to move all my stuff up there so i will be going at it blind without much help. My plan was to pack everything up before i leave so its basically just a bunch of boxes in my house, and then i guess just tell a buddy to meet a moving company here or something when im away, also will need a car transport company to get my two vehicles. I know you guys are thinking that i should just do the moving myself during that week off before start of work, problem with that is i have to find an apartment up there, so im planning on doing heavy online research then i guess after the training just get a hotel and a rental car and getting a place. Once i have the address, i can give the movers somewhere to go. My main worries are the timing, when i start work i will be working a lot and once the moving company picks my stuff up, i know it takes a while to move things but i cant guarntee that i will be there. So i dont know if they give you a window of a few days or what. Basically im doing this by myself and i know this is a very bare description but i pretty much need an apartment and my stuff moved up north including cars in a 5-7 window. What moving companies do you guys suggest? Car transport? Any other suggestions? |

get one of those pod things.
they show up at your place, you fill it up. then they can either take it to your new place or to a facility and store it, then you can have them bring it to new place. as far as cars either a transpo company. the auto train, or rent a uhaul trailer and pull one with the other. or get a few buddies together and have them drive em up and buy em plane tickets back or have another car of theirs following and they drive themselves back. much beer and gas money would be required lol. but as far as your stuff a pod would be the way to go cuz you can fill it at your lesuire and i think you can tell them when you want it delivered and they give you as much time to empty it and have it picked up as you need, |

Any idea what they charge for all that? |

+1 for pods
the P.O.D.S. (portable on demand storage) is definately the way to go. when we do major home renovations we store all the homeowners furniture in a pod out in front the house. as for the vehicles leave for training with one, store it there and take a plane back. then when you head back the last time once your pod is full and you are ready to go take your last car. you can live in a hotel or find an apartment temporarily. once you know where you are going to live take the pod out of storage and deliver it to your new home. http://www.pods.com/ 877-770-PODS |

In the last 6 years I have moved twice..... Both times to places that were sight unseen.
What I did was get a small Apartment near my office. I went for a more expensive apartment and got a 6-7 mth lease. This gives me the time to find a place I want to live longer. The first time I bought a new construction house in that area and this time I am staying at the place I rented for another year. 1st time I was single and it was easy... I got rid of everything I didn't need and moved with a 5X10 trailer. If it did not fit, it did not go. 2nd time I was married and *I* went first with a 5X10 trailer and then the moving company grabbed the rest of the stuff. But if you are single.... pack light and get rid of the old crap, sell it, donate it, give it away, throw it away. I drove one car when I moved and then flew back and drove the other. It would help if you said where you might be moving. Distance info would be helpful and maybe some people with local knowledge can give you aid or intel. |

be sure to shop around!
Upack the boards at dontuseuhaul.com used to have a good list of alternatives, but that seems to be gone. Hope it goes well. I have a love/ hate feeling for uhaul, I think the trailers are great, but the trucks/ reservations are always horrible. |
| I used two men and a truck depending on how far you are moving, I moved form Chattanooga to Clearwater and back with them, it was great only my stuff on the truck, pick up and drop off in the same day, a long day... cost was just 100 more than the big boys. Good luck on the move, I love the brown tape form the Uhaul store, works great, rips easy and stay on the box. |
