Girl Survives Accidental Shooting
Man Tells Deputies He'd Just Finished Cleaning Gun POSTED: Monday, October 12, 2009 UPDATED: 12:43 pm EDT October 12, 2009 CLAY COUNTY, Fla. –– A 13-year-old girl is recovering after Clay County sheriff's deputies said she was accidentally shot while in her home Saturday night. According to the incident report, Gregory Hird, 42, cleaned his .38-caliber revolver in the garage and walked into the master bedroom of their home on Ridge Haven Drive just before 9 p.m. Hird told deputies he pulled the hammer back to make sure the gun was safe before putting it away, but the gun was oily and his thumb slipped off, allowing the gun to fire. Tristin Wyza, who was walking into the bedroom at that moment, was shot in the left side and arm. She was transported by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. Deputies said her injuries were not life-threatening. According to the report, the bullet continued through the bedroom wall and was found lodged in the living room wall. How is pulling a hammer back on a loaded chamber making sure it is safe? That statement makes no sense at all. |

After all quite a few Arfcomers continuously tell us that it's perfectly safe to decock the hammer over a loaded chamber.  It is perfectly safe to decock the hammer on a loaded revolver, if it is done correctly. |

Also failed the 'Treat every firearm as though it is loaded' and 'know your target and what's beyond' tests. It's also perfectly safe to put a revolver in your mouth and pull the trigger if you know the chamber is empty. Still a bad practice. It only takes once to be wrong for the rest of your very short life. |
