Spend as much or more on the coax as you do on the antenna. LMR-400 is good. Get the antenna as high and in the clear as practical. I prefer aluminum antennas to those in fiberglass (which are often made out of coax inside the radome).

I was going to go with a Diamond x50 from the peak of my roof which would put the top of the antenna at about 30 ft. I live in an area with alot of tall pines.

I used the X-50 for a long time... great antenna! I think I still might have one too.
Get it as absolutely high as you can and use good coax (LMR-400 / 9913 / or better).
