| So, the lease on my apartment runs out at the end of this month. We're supposed to give 60 days notice if we're going to either renew or leave, but we' haven't been contacted by the office (as we were in the past). I'm unemployed, and can't find a job around here to save my life. I have two interviews tomorrow in Orlando (~50 miles away), and I'm sure I'll nail both, so we're looking at moving to Orlando at the end of the month. Can my landlord do anything to me if I just move out and let the lease expire? The apartment we're in now is clean, there's no damage, so what could/would happen if we just went up and told them Wednesday that we're not renewing? |

Have some proof that you contacted them in good faith. Take pictures, or a recording of the inside and surrounding property with a current newspaper from the date that you move out. I'm not sure of the legal ramifications of your not renewing the lease, but the above is some helpful advice at least. It's also possible that you may not get your security deposit back. |

The answer is 'no', you do not have to give the complex any heads-up that you will be leaving. The contract was for 1 year- not more, not less. Many leasing places will try to not give deposits back or try to claim a fine for not 'giving notice'. This happened to me once- I went to the landlord/tenent union, and not only did they have to give me my deposit immediately, they got a fine for trying to do it. I wonder how many people have been scammed by this... |
