Does anyone know firearms shipping laws? Do you have to use a particular carrier (ie USPS, UPS, FEDEX)? Who can transfer to whom... Sender Receiver yes/no non FFL to FFL FFl to non FFL non FFL to non FFL When the firearm is shipped, does it have to be broken down or can it be in assembled? |

From BATF (B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back] A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30] As a non-FFL You may ship a long gun via USPS, UPS or FedEX to anyone in state You may ship a handgun via UPS or FedEx to anyone in state. All firearms going out of state must ship to a FFL in the destination state. No ammo may be shipped by USPS They may ask for proof that it's unloaded. You have to notify the shipper that a firearm is being shipped. You will have to go to the UPS/FedEX terminal to ship a firearm, the stores won't accept them. It's a good idea to use a FFL to ship your firearm to CYA, you are still responsible in a private sale to ensure that the buyer is qualified to own a firearm. I.e age, not a felon, etc. |
