Every so often, I like to discover new Blogs. Admittedly, most of what's out there is boring, useless shite, but occasionally I stumble across a true gem. I like reading other people's thoughts on things. Anyways, that's not the point, but the setup. So I was cruising around Blogspot today, and I came across This Blog At first glance, it seems like another "I'm going to put my life online, because I desperately crave attention" blog of the sort that infest LiveJournal. But something prompted me to stop and read. Maybe the fact that whoever it is has my favorite little soldier's prayer thing on his front page. (I hope and pray that none may kill me, Nor I kill any, with woundings grim But if ever any should think to kill me I pray thee, God, let me kill him.) Upon reading the recent posts, the only thing I could think of to say was "Whoah." From the recent posts, I'd have to say that it's A) Someone who needs serious psychological assistance, or B) A new and interesting use of the Blog medium to tell a story. 'Cuz the guy's profile says he's from Orlando. And last I checked, we haven't had any mass deaths... |

its old hat nowadays, but yeah expect this to turn into a SHTF story usually this kind of stuff can be found on livejournal, but it pops up elsewhere from time to time. theyll start out sounding like a normal blog discussing some pointless aspect of their uninteresting lives, then the zombies, super plague, aliens, or what have you show up try alphadog.tk , scarecrowster.livejournal.com/ , or themagestorm.livejournal.com/ of a couple of examples. theres dozens more out there i think alphadog was one of the first. it created a bit of a stir when it first came out, but since then more and more people have attempted to copy the format. some more successfully than others |

Reset... Reboot... Alright, full disclosure time. In case you hadn't guessed (Or seen the original text of Neil's reply before I convinced him to change it) this is, in fact, a project of mine. Apologies if for the deception. I wanted to get a feel for the reaction without it being colored by any association with me. (In other words, I wanted deniability if people hated it ) However, given that I went public before I had really gotten the story rolling, it's kinda hard to get a reaction. Oops.Anyways, my main reason for breaking cover is to point out that I've moved the Blog to its own server. Technical difficulties with Blogger made continuing to host it there impractical. The new address is www.randomsurvival.com/ If anyone's got any feedback on the story, feel free to hit me up. To answer a few of the questions/comments raised previously: 1. I'm pretty sure I *don't* need mental help. Well, no more so than any other writer/creative sort. 2. There will be no Zombies. Not now, not ever. If I get that bored with the story, I'll end it. I'm trying to work with at least a tiny bit of realism here. 3. Likewise aliens. Or anything else from way out there. Thanks to VaultDweller for pointing out some other examples of this. I'd honestly never heard of any of them before, and thought I was being all unique and stuff. Well, I'm gonna roll with it anyways. Now that I'm not shrouded in anonymity or anything, I do have a few questions/requests: 1. Does anyone here work for one of the power companies? How about LEO/Disaster response? 2. I'm thinking about going multi-media at some point, but would need a few things. If you've got anything on the following list, and would be interested in helping, hit me up. The List: -Big-ass pickup truck. Preferably black. Nissan Titan if you've got one (Since that's what I've already written) -Empty warehouse/office/storage space -An abandoned building -Other things that might be interesting in pictures/video in this context. Also, if there are any writers out there: If you're interested in possibly helping out on this, hit me up. I've got a few ideas for working this into a multi-author thing. |
| If you haven't seen it yet, John Ringo has a blog-type book coming out soon called The Last Centurion, which is supposed to be the blog of an officer trapped in the Middle East after a world-wide epidemic and his efforts to get his troops back to the US. |

You know, maybe is is just me but I'm looking forward to tomorrows installment. Hurry it up will you!?!?!? This is worse than watching episodes of 24. At least on 24 we had Jack's daughter to look at... Since everybody else in this story is DRT (Dead Right There) I'm not sure I want to see anybodies daughter...lol... Maybe Capitan Reston has a daughter he will send in for recon. What is our hero doing for gasoline for his new 4x4? He has internet but no info? WTF? How about satellite/cable TV? OK, so get to work on tomorrows episode. Can you start an email thing and send the daily episode via email? Jon K. |

Checking in for future updates. Pretty interesting so far. Kinda reminds me of "Ted's Caving Page". Once I started reading it I couldn't stop. LL |
Necro-zombie-philia? I make no promises or binding statements regarding this matter. I will say that there will be other characters. Sitting around in the survival bunker gets kinda old after a while.
Funny, I asked myself that question this afternoon. But there's a plan.
Touche. There's a plan for that too, but I guess I haven't made it clear yet. I'll get on it.
I'll look into it. It's definitely a possibility, though getting posts to both the blog and an email list might be tricky, maintenance-wise. The blog does support RSS, though, which most modern email clients (Except maybe a few web-based ones) can use to subscribe, effectively doing the same thing as a mailing list. If you'd like help getting that set up, drop me an IM, and I'll get you going.
Anything in particular, or the whole thing in general? Part of the reason I took this project online is to get feedback as an ongoing thing. Criticism is good for the soul. It's the best way to improve. |

Well, I *WAS* going to come back and apologize for not posting anything, due to a busy last few days of the week, and then a weekend out of town. Then I tried to check my email when I got home. I haven't given up. Things are, in fact, just starting to get good, and I've got a good post ready to go when the server comes back. |
|
In case you haven't noticed already, the server is back up. And the first part of the marvelous weekend story is up. Technical difficulties prevented me from getting the whole thing written, but I'm working on it. I'd also like to announce the first of the cool things that I'm doing with the project: Another author. Due to the format I'm using, different authors for different characters was something I'd considered since the beginning, and I've got my first taker. Expect her first postings in a week or so, once we hammer out the details. |
